Need Help - Speedo, Tach, Cruise
This weekend I will be tackling an electrical problem with my 1992 V6 Firebird. I am looking for some ideas on where to start looking. Here is what happened:
When I had the car painted they got overspray on the dash. I replaced the dash.
After I replaced the dash, the tachometer and speedometer stopped working properly. They work, but the the readings are not accurate. The faster you go, the more inaccurate they read. At 70, it reads 55 mph. At the same time, the cruise control stopped working. It has power, but you cannot set a speed.
I used the old wiring harness when I replaced the dash.
I am thinking that all of the problems are related. I just don't know where to start looking. I really don't want to tear the entire dash out again. Any ideas where to start looking?

Re: Need Help - Speedo, Tach, Cruise
I hope noobieness will be looked upon lightly. I am searching for repair info for speedometer, etc. In my travels and newness and lack of repair skills I wonder how all three of these are connected-tach, speedometer, cruise control. (besides at the wire harness for gauges). My wonderings probably won't help you but, do you have a "buffer" for you VSS? and does it split under your dash for all these speedometer, cruise, tach, and did it somehow get damaged when you got painted or switched dash? Probably this doesn't even enter in but I don't know much and at this point if it is even a remote possibility it might steer in a right direction.

Your problem is consistent with a bad connection.
You can ‘ohm them out’ to make sure you’re getting good contact.
Pay particular attention to the VSS and buffer connections.
The Buffer is located behind the instrument panel at the right.
