Fuel pressure regulator change out

Several years ago I stuffed a TPI motor in a 91 chevy truck. The motor came out of an 89 IROC. I have been using the truck for years and have really enjoyed it. I ran into a problem the other day. We seem to be running out of gas. Big lean bog just off of idle. I changed the fuel filter because the fuel supply seemed limited to the engine. So I changed the fuel pump last night. I thought that I was in good shape until I started it up tonight. Hard to start and same lean bog. Motor starts easy when I shot gas into the top end otherwise it is very hard to start. I can hear the pump running as it should. I think that I have a bad FPR. What is the procedure to change this devil out. It is in the stock location just in front of the distributor. I wonder what kinda tricks there are to changing this out and what has to be removed to get to it. It can't be as hard as it looks. I have an 89 Camaro that needs to have the moser rear end installed so I want to move through this quickly!!!! Thanks to all who help!

woot i just did that! I changed the FPR on my 91 camaro. I havnt got it all back together yet so i dont know if it works... I had to take off the upper intake. Its not as hard as it sounds. I unbolted the passenger side runners completely and the top of the driver side, removed the plenuum and then the pass runner. i Left the throttle body attached and disconnected it completely. I'm thinkin of pulling it anyways but its stuck on there rather well. My manual says NOT to remove jsut the bell of the FPR to replace the insides... but it doenst seem like there is any problem with doing this. I dont understand what the prob. is but mayb i will when i get it back together.

I got the funky hole drilled torx set from Autozone for 9.99. You will need that to remove the bell cover on the FPR. there are three bolts on the base of the front 2 runners. One is easy to see another is low, prolly hiden by your harness and another comes in from the back on the other side. There are also three bolts on the base connection of the rear two runners. One is low and hard to get to cause of the loom.

Additionally, if you decide to remove the whole fuel rail, the fuel lines taht come in from the front need to be completely out of the way to get to a bolt that holds the union at that location to the front of the block. The lines run under my alternator (t-40 torx to remove) so i have to remove it to get those lines out of the way. took a while for me to find taht. The clips that hold the injectors in are suposed to come across the injector when "open". I never actually pulled the rail tho so im not sure how easy that stuff come off.

Thats pretty much all i know so far. Good luck to ya!

Update: You can remove the bell housing only from the fuel pressure regulator and do the swap without removing the entire rail. I'm still not sure why the manual asks you to remove the whole rail injectors and all.

Figured it out!

I had very little fuel pressure. I checked everything out and finally pulled the pump. I found that the short hose between the fuel pump and the steel tubing exiting the gas tank had a split in the side. This is the second time I have seen this. The other was a couple of months ago on an 86 Vette. I wonder if this might be the answer for a lot of these cars in this age group. Hard to find cause the fuel line is leaking inside the gas tank so you never see it. I have had to crank on the motor for some time but it always started and seemed to be strong. No it starts right up and seems to be back to the old level of performance. Thanks to all that replied.

I installed a new pump and the same thing happened to me. One month later the new piece of hose burst. I replaced it with 3/8 braided fuel emmisions hose. No prob yet.
