I have two LT1 camshafts, one is a 94 Roadmaster take out, the other is GM Part number : GMPT BC 17 242, Does anyone know what year cam this is and if auto or manual? I think it is from a 96 auto Z28, I am puting it in an 86 vette 350, TPI auto w/ vortec heads and edelbrock upper and lower TPI manifolds and a few other things, I am still selling my 87 IROC LT1, Z06 Brakes 5 Speed car as well if any interest. I have been trying to figure out cam numbers also......Does ANYONE know of a site, or ANYTHING that can help with GM LT1 cam numbers????????????

Here is a partial list of cams I have.
The LT1 cars had the same cam as the 96-2000 L31 Vortec trucks. Not as good a cam as the F and Y bodies.
They were designed to get the heavy body cars rolling and lacked performance.

Apparently 242 is the 3 digits of the GM part #.

I can't help with the LT1 cam info, but I'd personally put a good bit bigger cam in there. Of course, there's several factors, budgets, goals etc. etc., and of course I don't know what yours are, but you could certainly run a much bigger cam without being too much for the motor.

Part number: BC-17-242 = B-Body 191/196 - 418/430 - 111
95-97LT1 - BC-16-600 = F Body 206/214 - 470/490 - 112 - OR -
Y Body 215-224 - 470/490 - 112

The last two cams are from a Seal power camshaft part number cross reference in the back of the book. Part numbers are as follows:
22135 and 22237. These are what is in these cars originally, according to the book. The jpeg image from Pryor post gives GM parts numbers which maybe more reliable.

I am currently running a GM number 12551705 cam (BC-16-600) that was removed from a LT1 engine with aluminum heads. Do not know the origin as was given to me with severe over heating problems. (Bad Head Gasket) This cam is now in my 95 GMC Sportside with T56 upgrade. Very smooth, Lots of Torque and a nice flat curve to 5 grand. Running the BC-17-242 cam in a 305. Once again, Very smooth, Monster torque, and pulls good to about 4500 in my 88 Firebird with a T5. I might upgrade to a LT4 camshaft #12551142 just because of the same characteristics and more HP with equal torque.

Valve train in both vehicles is now very reliable and mileage was a concern for me in my truck because of daily driver status. Had a Com Cams XE256H before and the cam lost several lobes after 370 miles. Was following their breaking in procedure and after 2 oil changes WITH ZDDP additive, She still failed. Can't see spending $500 plus for new roller cam when these cams are plentiful. JMO. Funny thing, Got a comp cam kit for a Thumpr and ran it for 500 miles, Sounds good, but still a race oriented camshaft. It too is a flat tappet cam, and yet after it was pulled looks like the wear pattern is Very Good.

All of this research began after my cam died. So as I gather info, I'll try to post. I also have a spare Block that I am setting up a degree wheel and dial indicator to measure each cam as I find them at the local swap meets.

Thanks for that post Fbody!!! This cam will be going in a truck for towing and now I think I will be looking for the BC-16-600 cam.. May be the other one may be a better choice..Do you have the GM# for that one you said was 215-224 470/490 on a 112??

In my earlier post that number was a Federal Mogul number 22237. That cam can be found with some luck. Local Car Quest down here can't seem to locate one in any of there warehouse's but other stores might be able to cross reference to their number. Just be sure to verify the specs.

Seal power number CS-808 was cross referenced from Federal Mogul number.

Search ebay motors, LT1 and found several camshafts, one at 89 dollars new take out and another at 160 dollars. the rest are quite pricey. Good Luck.

Bear with me, I'm trying to keep all my stickies and notes in order but the cat seems to like sleeping on them. Spreadsheet will be forth coming as soon as I get the time.

P.S. - Manager at Car Quest is loaning me the "books" from seal power and some older TRW reference material as well as Crane and Comp cam "books".

OK -- Federal Mogul no longer provides that cam however Melling camshaft number is the same and can be ordered.

I don't know the part numbers or the specs for that matter but if your looking into a LT1 cam you want out of a 96-97 F-body or Corvette

Yeah, That's what I'm running now.... As stated in previous post. Actually it's casting number is BC-16-600. I also have this cam BC-17-242. Now a lot of individuals seem to be running across these camshafts and there is a lot of Good and Bad info out here. Not all of it correct. That is why I'm trying to document these cams and verify them in a working engine block for a more accurate profile. There are many providers that have near on- GM spec cams with some moderate changes in center lines and durations that will give some really nice HP and Torque numbers, without breaking the bank.

But thanks for the info. if you can get me some numbers I would appreciate it.
