L98.......Motor swap myths, also other ?s

I got no replies on the "motor swap" board, so here goes. I did some thinking and revised my post...

I have been toying with the idea of either swapping in a SDPC L98 (12513151) engine in place of my LB9 engine, or just buying a used L98 longblock and swapping over my existing TPI.
There are a few areas that are fuzzy for me as far as this swap goes.

1. Stock 19 lb. injectors. Safe to use, or will the engine run lean, and not rev? Should I purchase 22 lb. injectors instead?

2. 350 knock sensor. Simple enough, do I need to replace this?

3. ESC module. Do I have the name right? Does this need to be replaced as well?

4. 350 PROM. I have decided that I would use a factory L98 prom with either combination; mainly because of a small budget.

So what else am I looking at here?
With that said, should I look for an entire TPI setup with all the correct wiring, computer, injectors, and prom with the L98? Which is going to be more cost effective? I emailed some online salvage sites and I can get an L98 longblock for about 7/800 bucks.

My car is 1989 (MAF based)

Just looking for your opinions. Thanks

1. and 4. are related. If you run a 350 chip, you will either need an AFPR to up the flow rate to 22 #/hr, use the 350 injectors, or you will have driveability problems. If you are on a budget, stick with the 305 chip, replace both later.

2. So they say. I have a problem with this one but its just a theory so keep that in mind. Supposedly a gear drive will set off the knock sensor, 305 or 350. The gear drive sends the same sound wave through the engine regardless of the displacement. If thats the case, then it shouldnt matter what knock sensor you use, it can hear both sound waves of the 350 and 305 knock, which is what I hear is the difference. How about being the guinea pig and intentionally making the car knock with the 350 and see if the system still works. BTW I have a car with a gear drive, and it doesnt set off the sensor. Leads me to believe it would need to be changed.

3. IIRC the sensor and module are matched, so yea you would have to change both.

Does that price include the electronics and injectors too? And you have to look at the price of the engine alone.

That price was for the long block alone, no electronics, I believe. Any ideas where I can get a better deal?

and Thanks!

Why not buy or better yet, BUILD a shortblock and put your TPI on top of it ? They only thing you would need is a decent set of heads. If you're on a budget even L98 heads are not too shabby for a stock type swap.

------------------
92 Z28 L98 350
---------------
Ported and polished heads, ported stock TPI base, ported plenum, Comp Cams XR270HR-10 cam (lift .495/.502 duration 218/224 lobe separation 110), Edelbrock TES headers, LT4 valve springs, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster catback with LT1 style tips, MSD coil & wires...

"Take that auto, drop it in first, hold the brakes, stomp the gas and grin from ear to ear! :-)

Hey,

I do a lot of f-body salvage outside of
Boston, Ma.

What you really want to do is get a 350
truck block with the 4 bolt main, (or marine)
and roller provisions as well as 1 peice
rear main. The price for this from a typical
machine shop is 125.00. You can then choose
to bore it over.

As far as other things go. I generally get
between 50-100.00 for the L98 heads. I can't
imagine someone paying much more for that.
You should always install a new crank, and
check your rods. Stock rods don't hold up
to much power, and rods are not too expencive.

As far as the other stuff goes, I get 125.00
for TPI harnesses, and 50.00 for computers.
If you get a crap computer from a junkyard
you can get a reman one at auto zone for 99.00 and use it as a core.

The most I could charge someone for a running
L98 longblock is like 500.00 with the TPI
intake intact, minus harness but most of the
sensors. I couldn't sleep at night
charging more than that.

So the general concensus here is that I should build my own lower-end for cheap, using maybe an 87-up roller block and put my own heads on it? Should I go with the aluminum D-port heads? Help me out!!
