Start up problems

My 85 has some issues when i start it. When it is cold it will not start unless I open the throttle at least 3/4 open. Then it will start but it will run rough and need plenty of throttle to keep running. A lot of smoke comes out the exhaust and it smells like gas. After about 10 seconds it idles normal. If i turn it off and start it up within 10 seconds it will start normal. Anybody have this problem before, I am thinking its the cold start injector. I have no codes by the way.

Re: Start up problems

It's probably not the cold start injector. It's probably muliple injectors on the motor leaking. Here's a quick test. Hook up a fuel pressure guage to the schader valve on the fuel rail. Run the car for a minutes and note the presurre should be around 36 to 44 running. Then shut the car off and watch the guage. If it drops to zero right away your injectors are leaking. Time for a new set.

Re: Start up problems

check your fuel pressure regulator. I just changed this on mine because I was having the same problem with mine but a lot more drastic. Mine would take forever to start and when it did it ran rough and had black smoke out the exhaust. I checked the regulator and found it to be bad. Replaced it and now the car barely gets a crank in before it starts and it even runs smoother and seems to have a little more get up on take-off.
