If you're looking into big mods, most aftermarket aluminum heads have a CARB EO#, as does the aftermarket TPI bases and intakes, except the Miniram. Some cams have EO#s also but they're usually pretty tame.

The bigger cams that don't have EO#s on them have been known to pass emissions easily...like kane91z said, anything they can't see they won't know.

But for a part to be truly legal in Cali, it must have a CARB EO# assigned to it.

You can also port your plenum, and have a shop bore your original throttle body out to 52mm.

I have a question. If say i replaced my 305 with a 350, (im sure it isn't emissions legal in california, filling your car with GAS isn't emissions legal here)

How would they know? actually, if i passed smog, how would they know if i had a part which didn't have a E-O number? I wonder sometimes. I know i have to keep my TPI Crap, now that i live in california. (Fuel injection sucks, unless you are bill gates or richer, and also a custom prom programmer, for custom programming emissions legal proms in a emission-free state)

How is a part even listed with a E-O Number anyway? Is that decided and done by the company who produces the product? or does a sample part have to be given to the state to "Scanction" it or whatever?

They wouldn't, unless the looked real hard. If your engine is warm, running in closed loop, not buring oil, and your cats are in good shape, the sniffer wont know the difference between a 305 and a 350.

If it is part they can easily see, they will check for the EO. The after market company gets an EO by submitting the part to the CARB (California Air Resource Board) and they test it to make sure it does not mess up the emissions output.

Depending on the year your car was produced, the 305 to 350 swap may be SMOG legal. From what I understand, for an engine swap in CA to be legal, it must 1) Be an engine from a car that is as old or newer than the car into which it is going, and 2) The engine must have been factory optioned for your carline in that production year. So from '86 to '92, the L98 350 was a factory option for GM F-Bodies. Other than that, the SMOG legality of aftermarket parts is limited to what the inspectors can see, and what will cause your car to fail the sniffer. And even then, if you find the "right" inspector, some of that stuff may not matter too much. Just depends on how radical you wanna go.

Depending on how **** the smog tech is, he may ask for proof of an EO number for something obvious like headers...I should know, it happened to me. They have a book which lists all smog legal parts for different year cars. A CARB approved part should have a tag or decal that comes with the part so you can show the smog guy it's legal. He'll then go in his book and cross reference the EO number to make sure it was designed to be used legally on your car.

I ran into this problem when I tried to smog my car last year. I have SLP headers with the AIR tubes, but he couldn't give the smog certificate because I couldn't prove my headers were smog legal (which they are). Mine never came with the decal with the EO number, but I was showing him in his little book which headers I have but he wouldn't go for it. I guess he was just trying to cover his *** but it's still frustrating for me because my car passed the sniffer! (which is what really matters) Anyway be ready to show proof and make sure you get those stupid decals with your part.

I run almost 108 MPH in the quarter so far, and my car is 99% CA smog legal. And I'm hoping to hit 110 MPH soon. No nitrous, all engine.

LOL, no sneaky pete...at least not yet. AFRs, Superram, ZZ3 cam, and SLP headers are what's on there. I think I should be running a little faster for what it has but I think the ZZ3 cam is holding me back right now...great cam for a LTR setup, but a little small for a Superram and AFR combo. As soon as I get back to the states I have an LPE 219 cam and a Yank 3000 torque converter waiting to go in. I'm also hoping to hit over 110-112 in the quarter NA and still be smog legal.
