Ok guys I need help!!!

I am new to the camaro world. I bought my 89 iroc-z just last week and it needs an engine. I have been calling the dealerships and they tell me that my engine was discontinued. I have a 350 5.7 V8 with TPI. What do I do??

well it is 1 of the longest gm ran engine line so any junkyard will have a rebuildable 350 block. Don't pay more than 150 for it. Then take it to a machine shop and have it rebuilt, or check in to 350 crate engines from gm high performance or even an aftermarket company like blueprint or such.

How hard is it to rebuild a 350 after machining with new parts? I am at this point and am debating rather to have it built or do it myself.

It's real hard to give advice not knowing what your mechanic skills are, how big your budget is, how soon you need it up and running and how much you will depend on the car. Daily driver? Weekend warrior?

You can buy a whole new longblock and simply transfer over the TPI and accessories, you can buy a shortblock and transfer everything over, heck depending on why you need a new motor, you could probably have your motor rebuilt.

If you don't have a lot of money, but also don't have a lot of mechanical skills, your best bet is probably to take it to a good mechanic (one you trust) and tell them straight forward what the deal is, and ask what they can do for you. They can probably re-use just about everything, and they'll fix or replace what is needed. It ain't gonna be cheap, but it isn't like buying a whole new motor either. Again, we don't know enough about your situation to really give good advice.

Re: Ok guys I need help!!!

It is going to be a weekend warrior. I have spent tht last 2 years fully restoring a 91' GTA and this is my last step before reassembly. My goal is to have it done by May. I have all of the parts already (new) and the engine block has been magnafluxed, bored 0.04, line honed, and all of the other stuff. The crank, rods, and pictons are all brand new. I have the rotating assembly balanced and all bearing journals polished. I would say my mechanic skills are above average. I have never rebuilt an engine but I have done things such as gasket replacements, fuel pumps, tune-ups, wheel bearings, brake systems.

Like most people, I do not have an unlimited budget. I would prefer to spend the money to build the engine on something else. However, if it is supper difficult than I would pay. My worst fear would be to complete my restoration project and have the engine blow.

Thanks for your help and opinions!

Re: Ok guys I need help!!!

do it by the book for your first time-you can adlib later

try to get an experience set of eyes- usually if you get the hands too you dont tend to learn alot. basically try to do as much of the work as you can

super clean is the main key. if you start to think to yourself "am I bieng too picky about keeping this clean" then you are doing it right
