A/C Delete/Belt Routing/Tensioner Set Up

I wonder if anyone else has done it this way...? Here is what I am running on my '89 IROC as far as belt routing and tensioning goes (more/larger pictars can be found here):

As you can see, I have relocated the alternator to the passenger side, where the A/C compressor used to be. Also, I mounted the alternator so it can pivot and turned it into the tensioner through the use of a gas spring (McMaster-Carr Part #: 4138T528). And, there was a bunch of grinding to be done on the A/C bracket to get the alt. fans to clear. I also had to get a large piece of hex rod drilled and tapped to serve as the lower mount for the gas spring.

Anyways, I figured I would throw this out there as an idea to any one who finds themselves inclined to fool around with their serpentine belt routing and is limited by the positioning of the stock tensioner.

Also, I am kind of looking for some feedback as to the durability of this setup...? i.e the gas spring is rated up to 180 degrees F and it is mounted right behind the 200+ degree radiator... I wonder what the air temp is getting up to...? I wish I had a infrared thermometer that I could just point at the spring after a long drive, but I don't... I have had it on the car for probably 500 miles with no problems, once with the water temp gauge reading consistantly over 220 (100+ degree day on the freeway with no air dam, heater on).

All in all, this is just a temporary setup for me, as I am going to an LSx setup as soon as I can get the parts together. I thought it was kind of an interesting setup, and wanted to share.

Some things I would do differently if I were to do it again: ~Done bushings for the alternator pivot mount and used a smaller bolt. ~Maybe a higher temp. rated spring (300 deg.), but those are $85. ~A better type of slide guide thing for alt., seen now where all the grease is smeared... ~If I didn't have to pass emissions I may have tried something similar with the alt relocated to where the smog pump is...

Thanks for looking.
