TPI build options
getting ready to pull my TPI and rebuild it for some more power. looking for a few of you to throw some ideas at me that will help me decide on the build. i am looking to get about 350hp to the wheels. i have a full hooker exhaust on the car as we speak and have a set of AS&M runners. was planning on getting a TPiS intake base to match the runners and also port the plnum to match. .
looking for some ideas of what some of you may have done. parts im looking for help/ideas w/ are:
heads
cam
injectors
and anything else i need to consider

Re: TPI build options
a good set of heads for sure, maybe something along the lines of Vortecs.
sell your runners and get in on the GP for a FIRST intake.

Re: TPI build options
Here's a build list i've been chipping away at. Check around for the vortec stuff i've got some interesting offers locally for some motors so i'm not sure if i'll get to complete this build.
Heads (Trick Flow)1099
shortblock (pace)1263
cam\lifters (comp)501
timing chain/cover60
Harland sharp Rockers239
valve covers55
oil pump (melling HV)63.99
AS&M & Super RamPurchased
Misc200
Dstributor315.7
Total:$3,796.69
From what i read ford injectors are pretty good for the cars. Comp cams website has cam's they specifically recommend for the tpi.
This is just an idea of a build sheet that i came up with to give myself a price estimate. Summit has 20% sales 2-3 a year usually during the biggest shows thats why i don't factor in tax....

Re: TPI build options
I've been looking at doing the same thing and stumbled across a combo that is close to what you want. 385hp/405lb vortec crate engine from Pace with a FIRST Vortec and plenum using your electronics would bring it close to 4 grand. Less labor with a warranty sounded good to me. Good luck with your build and update how it goes. As soon as my tax refund comes I'll be doing something. Here's the links:

Re: TPI build options
no its going to be a daily driver mostly.
and yes timing chain, rr's, lifters are all goingto be replaced as well.
im wanting to keep the block i have since i want it to look as original and as stock as possible. i though of just replacing the intake and having the heads ported and polished and changing out the valve train and adding a bigger cam. if i can get between 350-400 hp at the wheels, ill be very happy.
my father in law is going to do the work while i am deployed, so all ill have to do is buy the parts.

Re: TPI build options
Don't know yet... I'm still digging. Will be doing my project in a few months. I do believe a cam with power curve maxing below 4500 will do just fine. So far, it's the best price for a perf crate with Vortecs and I'm still looking for the chart. Any help would be greatly appreciated before spending the green.
What I have found so far leads me to believe that duration needs to be closer to stock while lift needs to be as much as you can get. The "Pace" 355 crate motor I found has got more than stock duration but plenty of lift. Here's a link with a summary from Vader that made sense to me...
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...-duration.html
When considering the Vortec heads flow a bit more than stock and the FIRST plenum can match those characteristics, I found some more info supporting the use of cams with ZZ9 numbers. Check this one out for 400hp/500lb...
http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c4/joe90/index9.shtml
A couple more builds with longer than stock duration with good power found here...
http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...ified-tpi.html
Needless to say, I am still digging for the right combo just like navyCM and everyone else is. If you find something good, share it!!

Re: TPI build options
It doesnt matter, if you want 350 RWHP you're going to need a bigger/better camshaft and some custom chip tuning.
And you're going to need shorter length runners. Stock style long tubes will limit you to about 320 RWHP, as I've found out. (see my thread at the top of the TPI forum "Our quest for a better flowing TPI")

Re: TPI build options
hi, i currently have a 400 small block out of a 76 pickup and havae an 89 corvette factory tpi setup, with aftermarket computer. and am looking to build this motor for a second gen camaro. any suggestions on heads and any possibly problems, i believe i read something about the 89 corvette tpi's having an egr vlav for the heads rather than the valve covers, and excuse any lateness with my replies, i am currently in iraq, and am planning this build for my return to the states, just want everything ready to go for my return. any suggestions or help?
