the more I fix the worse the car runs

OK.
The initial problem when I bought this pos was that it had a hesitation at acceleration with a misfire. Long story short, pretty much all the engine
sensors/relays were replaced (except the knock sensor and cts).
Full tune-up with new plugs, wires hp coil and icm, stock type cap and rotor.
Replaced the fuel pump, and filter.
Got a deal on some 24# injectors my supervisor had sitting in a intake manifold off his old firebird. Installed those but in the process somehow burnt
out the alternator. Thought the injectors were bad and reinstalled the stock
ones. Still no start. Replaced the alternator and battery and the car fired up.
The initial test drive (with the stock injectors), showed the hesitation was gone.
So in seems that in fact the problem may have been that my alternator was
going bad and the battery wasn't that great to begin with so maybe there
wasn't enough juice to fire the injectors properly.
Anywho, I took out the stock ones and installed the 24# injectors. Car seemed to run ok.
Then my "luck" kicked in. Intermittently when I would drive, the ses light
would come on and the car felt like it was going to cut off. Next thing in my
mind was to replace the ecm which I did.
Problem solved briefly, until once again my "luck" kicked in. Ses would come on and car would cut off. Usually it would fire back up until yesterday.
Car barely started but got to work where it died. Turn the key and no crank
at all. No codes are flashing but the handshake code.
Ok tekkies, what should I look at first??????????????????????
Once I get this pile of sh** running I am getting rid of it.
So new condition is turn the key and no crank at all. No security light staying
on either if that helps!
Speaking of help, HELP!!!!!

do you have any mods and programming to support the 24# injectors?
if not then put the old ones back

How many volts do you have at the battery and the starter?

First thing you need to do is take a step back and take a deep breath(or have a beer like I do). You may be compounding your problem by throwing parts at it.
You started out with a hesitation and now it won't start?
I know your frustration but stop and think about the problem and start at the basics. The step you skip will be the one thats wrong.

I had a similar deal once while doing an intake manifold and headers. The car woulnd'nt run right so I pulled the Manifold, re did jets, changed every componet in and on the HEI, new wires, etc, turned out I had a bad set of spark plugs. Yes, 8 bad plugs!!! not the wrong size or heat range, just bad.
You'll get it, Good luck

Re: the more I fix the worse the car runs

I have to do some basic tests on the starter tomorrow.
As far as any mods, no. It's stock. Being that stock injectors are 22# I was
told that I shouldn't have to really do any real tuning.
Anyways, the old ones were thrown away not that it would do any good.
They have certain positions where they have to be installed and I didn't
mark them.
That's kinda what I thought though. Nothing coming from the starter. So
tomorrow, battery and starter check. Will also inspect the dizzy and rotor
to make sure nothing's going on there.
Tune in tomorrow for the next rant

Re: the more I fix the worse the car runs

What wires did you get? For years I had luck with the autozone $25 wires, not with TPI. It was horrible, misfiring with brand new wires, arcing with brand new wires, if they touched eachother (which is almost impossible not to do) misfires would happen. So I went and bought GM AC DELCO wires and problem solved. I'm sure I could've been fine with some nice 8mm MSDs but, I didn't want to waste time trying them out.

What is your timing at? Maybe your accidently put wires on the distributor wrong? I'm not bashing your skills or anything, just pointing out possibilities. I know when i'm super frustrated like you are now, I need a second set of eyes on the work I do under the hood.

Re: the more I fix the worse the car runs

Sounds like an electrical gremlin all along. There is a reason the alternator failed in the first place. There are a whole bunch of fusible links there at the starter that if they go out, they take out your power.

I had some of those links pop when I was driving on the highway, and the car acted like someone turned off the power switch and it was all I could do to pull it over to the side of the road.

Check your wires and make sure you plugged everything back in when you put it all together, especially any grounds you may have taken off.

Re: the more I fix the worse the car runs

Been raining down here so haven't had a chance to check the starter.
The theft deterrent relay came in that I ordered from napa and I installed it.
The car fired right up and so far (just been driving for about an hour), it
hasn't tried to stall out on me.
I will however do as you suggested and check all wires going to the starter and alternator.
I believe I have 8mm wires (I know they aren't 7's of any kind).
But will still go over all ignition components.
I did check the injector pulses with a screwdriver and they all were firing
although 1 seemed to be weaker than the rest.
How do I check them with a vom? What wires do I probe?
Want to see if the wire and/or injector might be bad.
Thanks to all for the help/suggestions.
I have "enhanced my calm".

Re: the more I fix the worse the car runs

check the injectors ohms with the vom set to ohms. it should read 11.0-14.0 ohms.
a noid light will check for fire on the injector connectors
