Which TPI Runners?

Hey everyone, Im new to this TPI system and Im trying to get an idea of what would be the best route for me. I did a search and not much related to exactly what Im asking.

I thought a bit ago that the HSR was the best choice but after doing some research Ive come to the conclusion I want to go a different route.

I would like to keep my stock plenum and fuel rails if possible.

I plan on getting 24lb injectors and a adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

I dont plan on being cheap in this endeavor, but Im not rich at the same time.

That in mind, My questions are:
-is the edelbrock runners and baseplate and good deal? do they work with the stock plenum? do I even need the baseplate?
-is a high flow baseplate worth it or is runners where its at, if so what runners are the best?
-what would I have to do with the stock plenum?

Any comments or opinions are appreciated!

Bigger injectors with stock internals won't do much more than I would say increase your fuel consumption... your stock 22 lb injectors should be fine... there's an intake I think called mini-ram that a number of members are happy with... personally I would rather go with Edelbrock...

Re: Which TPI Runners?

I noticed that the article you provided said that the Edelbrock High Flow TPI system is designed for 85-91 cars. Why not 1992? So that system won't work on my 92 z28?

What are your guys thoughts on this manifold?

Sorry to thread jack, but I'm looking at doing the same thing and a lot of people get mad when the same questions keeping asked.

Re: Which TPI Runners?

If your going to go with aftermarket runners then you should get an aftermarket base. If staying stock is what your after then the edelbrocks will look very out of place. AS&M and Accel make runners that look very similar to stock ones, only larger internally. SLP makes a very good runner that can be megaported allowing tons of airflow. Your plenum will need to be ported to take advantage of the new runners too. Do a search, there are tons of threads and even "how to's". The best base I have seen is the old Accel Superram casting. TPIS has a Bigmouth base and Edelbrock's is supposed to be ok too. Good Luck.

Re: Which TPI Runners?

85-88 had the cold start injector
89-92 did not have the cold start injector...

it should cover 92 TPI....

Re: Which TPI Runners?

yes well my choices are limited because of emissions and the requirement of having a CARB EO decal... otherwise if I were to get pulled over I could face possible fines and getting my car impounded... a risk I really to feel I want to take...

Re: Which TPI Runners?

there is a ton of stuff on here about it.Keep looking.Heres mt Depends on how much money you wont to spend and if you want it to look stock.I bought another plenum to port for like $50.Bought a used tpis lower intake manifold for $250,and a set of slp runners for $200 i think.IIRC you get more gains out of the lower manifold than runners.Runners without manifold and/or ported plenum will prolly do very little. The slp runners do not look stock and dont flow supper awesome in stock casting but have a ton of room to port and improve, which i did.TPIS or edelbrock lower manifold will be the easiest to find and are all made by edelbrock now.You may find an old accel base however.
With stock heads and cam You may not see a ton of improvement but I do think you would see some improvement.IMHO,Look around and get some used stuff and save you some money.TPIS/AS&M RUNNERS FLOW GREAT AND LOOK STOCK BUT THEY ARE PRICEY and harder to find use it seems. The slps will flow as well with some work. The works not that hard, with the right tools and research.Edelbrock now makes all the different bases.A buddy of mine has an old accel base he was going to put on his brothers SR/406 cid but it didnt seem to fit the afrs he had as well as the tpis base did.
We have measured the old accel vs the tpis manifold and there is really no difference.Especially when you port like we did.

Btw the miniram and hsr are better but are atleast twice as expensive.

Re: Which TPI Runners?

i have just fitted an edlebrock inlete manifold. OMG!!!!!! after a couple of years of running edlebrock heads and bigger cam, then about a year with slp runners and bigger tb, i decided to chande the intake. i can honestly say that other than using nitrous, its the biggest power gain ive ever noticed. its like the new manifold has somehow awoken the heads/cam/runners!

Proof that removing the bottleneck will increase flow. I am running a stock intake ported to match the accel runners and a ported plenum to match. These were all opened up quite a bit by Lingenfelter back in the day when they used to do a lot of TPI port work. They should flow very well, but if I had money to get shiny new parts, I would go with the TPIS bigmouth or accel superram base and match it with some nice runners, either SLP or AS&M, and port the plenum to match.

1) The AS&M runners look exactly like stock runners. I have had mine on my car for seven years, and many smog inspections, without even a second look. That includes having a mechanic ask me for CARB decals for half the stuff under my hood (dude actually said I had to have a decal for my Throttle Body even though the E.O. number was cast into the side of it), yet the guy never even glanced at my runners.

2) Why would a cop look under your hood? And how is he going to know which equipment requires E.O. numbers? I've never been asked to pop my hood, and I have been pulled over many, many times.

Did you do any porting or have the chip retuned, after the manifold install or did you just slap it on and take it for a drive?

Re: Which TPI Runners?

i literally just put the new manifold on. im even using the stock 22lb injectors. my best quater mile time before hand was a 13.2 @ 102 mph. it really does feel like it could do a 12.9 now, it feels so much more powerful. i also installed a ram air hood and acompaning air filter box too.
