New Rocker Arms. Recommendations?
Guys, I want to put some new rocker arms on my car.
For now the heads and internals are stock, and I was wanting to get some 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers to pick up a few horses in the meantime as a cheap and quick bolt on upgrade. A couple questions though:
I've researched the procedure for setting the preload and it look as easy as changing oil. But going from stock 1.5 rockers to 1.6's, am I going to have to retime the engine or take any other steps?
Looking at the comp rockers, what's gonna be the difference between the magnum and pro magnums?
How much of a small power increase am I looking at here? I know that a new tune is going to benefit me the best, but since I have a MAF system I figure I should be able to pretty much bolt on and drive away.
Will there be enough valve to piston clearance with the increased lift? The LAST thing I want is bent up valvetrain/tagged pistons...
Are there any further modifications anyone recommends such as changing the mounting style or stud girdles?

This is just my opinion but I think you would pick up more HP by performing other modifications. Going to a 1.6 ratio is not really going to get you much, especially if the rest of the components are stock. In the case of TPI, your intake/plenum/runners are the major restriction. It all depends on what you have done to your motor. Fill us in on that and we can provide better responses.
You will not have to re-time the engine necessarily but should for good practice. You will have to measure for push rod length and potentially get new pushrods.
Other can chime in as I am not certain, but I think you would be fine by going to a 1.6 ratio. However, like I mentioned before, the money per HP may be be better somewhere else.
As for brand, I highly recommend Harland Sharp.
Good Luck!

1.6 rockers is a great upgrade for a stock engine, you will definatly notice a differnce,no timing is involved.
Ive done this to many of my trans am and was very happy with the results.
Its basically giving your cam more lift.
Id go with comp steel roller rockers, you get what you pay for.
Ive had to change valve coves or gut them to clear the wide body alluminum rocker arms. The bolt shaft on the stock covers got in the way.
Id say your looking at about a 10hp increase,I noticed more of a TQ increase then HP.

Right now mods for my engine are headerback exhaust, SLP runners with port matched plenum (I mean I did the completel job casting blocks and all) and a few other misc odds n ends. The manifold base is stock at the moment but I have in my basement the legendary lingenfelter TPI base that will be installed later this summer. The next mod after that will be a set of trickflow heads as I am quite serious about this 305 build. And the good part the trickflow heads come assembled with everything except rocker arms so I can just swap them over.

That's exactly what I'm aiming for. Since the 305 is downplayed so much I want someone to look at my engine or after I just get done beating billy bob and his 350 for them to ask what it is and I say, "Just a 305..."

Re: New Rocker Arms. Recommendations?
I am looking at a few different sets here. Can anyone explain what the benefit of one over the other would be because the BIGGEST difference I see potentially is price:
http://www.compperformancegroupstore...UltraProMagnum
http://www.compperformancegroupstore...Code=ProMagnum
http://www.compperformancegroupstore...e=MagnumRoller
http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=635&gid=198
The Lunati ones look like they're for full roller valvetrain, but they're the only 1.6 roller tips I could find in Lunati.
Also, where do stud girdles and guide plates come in? And what about what Wildj stated with the pushrod length?
Also, the stock valve psinrgs should be able to handle 1.6 rockers with a stock cam, right?

What about ProComp 1.6 full roller aluminum rockers? I can get the entire set for $125. The only part that has me concerned is like someone already stated you get what you pay for.

I hope im not speaking too soon seeing as how Ive only revved this engine and let it idle for minutes at a time because its missing its trans rightnow, the procomp roller rockers on mine seem to be fine...very thick and beefy looking. Im sure their fine, alot of people dont say how they screw stuff up and if they do bite the bullet...at least you only got a benjy in um
