Need help on choosing Camshaft for 305 TPI!
First of all...PLEASE don't start the argument about swapping the 350 because I tried to find a bare block from ANY GENERATION and I couldn't find one. The reason for this is that I live in Georgia (Republic) and there are very few American V8's here. And there is only ONE (1!!!) running V8 F body...that is mine! I haven't given up on the search yet...but meanwhile I want some extra power from my 305.
My car is a 87 Trans Am 305 Tpi that I converted from auto to manual. (this alone was the nightmare that I would never want to go through again...).
As far as I know the power output of the automatics were less because of the difference in cam.
I want to change the camshaft in my car and need advice about it. I'm looking for as much power as possible.
It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help me choosing one.
The price has to be less than 300$ if possible...
I've seen cam and lifter kits on rockauto and hawksthidgenparts. Buying from those websites would be really great because I have done that quite a few times and had no problems.
thanks in advance

Just a piece of advice, don't just think about a cam you WILL probably need springs as well, and since you have them off you may as well get valve guide seals too. Preferably for the exhaust side if you can as well. If it was me I would do the following keeping a (moderate) budget in mind)
-.120 in shims on the exhaust side, and ditch the stock retainers. You can use another set of intake side retainers for the exhaust now.
-new set of valve springs. This is a mandatory piece IMO with any cam, they are probably old and marginal for the stocker now.
-Valve seals. Not mandatory but if you have the "morning puff" of smoke this will cure it. You want 2 sets of the intake style seals, and put the other set on the exhaust. This is how the L31 Vortec engines are set up.
-Timing set. If you're in there why not? May as well keep it straight
-If you have time, a porting set. You may have some of this stuff already, but this is a VERY good time to do the base since you're going to have it off. Additional power there easily.
-Intake gaskets. Don't expect to reuse your TPI gaskets. If you port I recommend MR Gasket 146 (it may be called MRG-146)
-The Cam its self. I don't know if you can order it from Rock Auto but this cam is one with the specs I like and the price fits in with your objectives after you buy the above parts. I would strongly advise some method of tuning. Even if it's an AFPR, and I would consider that BARE minimum. You will realize maximum power potential by cutting new chips.

Thank you very much for your reply. I find people here are friendly and helpful :-)))
Sorry for the late reply. It's because of the time difference.
I have several questions about your post:
I have more time than 5 dead people together...honestly... so I'd gladly do the base porting. Are there anywhere instructions for it?
I didn't get what you said about cam...did you write anywhere any specific Cam that I didn't read...? :-| I can easily order things from rockauto. That's where I buy most of the things from.

I recommend Crane Compucam 2032 part # 104224. It is about the biggest cam you can put in a 305 and is computer friendly and requires no special tuning. A lot of people here have run that cam. You will need new springs. Also, nice looking T/A. The car looks really clean. Jegs and Summit Racing I believe both will ship internationally and are some of the biggest performance parts dealers in the USA.
