shifting too soon with 3.23

I got a 3.23 rear installed today and the tranny shifts too soon in my opinion. Almost as soon as I start moving, it shifts into second. I had 2.73 gears and the tranny is a TH350. All I can think of to do is screw the modulator valve screw in as far as it will go and see what difference it makes. I'm going to eventually get a t56 and 3.73 or 4.11 rear, so I don't want to put a lot of money into my transmission. Is there anything else I can do to make it shift later? Thanks.

You need to either adjust your governor for the new gears or get a new one designed for 3:23s. This is your problem, I have the same problem, just need to get it fixed.

For now, I just manually shift if I plan on using higher rpms.

Thanks, Mark. I don't think about manually shifting. That's a good idea.

NP, of course I would be careful manually shifting if you still have the stock shifter, not to slide into N, I did it before I got my Megashifter.

I think right now my car in D shifts into 2nd at like 5mph. That really sucks.

How do you adjust the governor? I have this problem as well with my 3.27's. And will this change where it kicks down also? Being in third gear after turning a corner is getting old.

Lighter weights & springs will make it shift later, heavier ones, earlier. Kits are available at most trans shops, including some of the online ones.

how do you know what weights and springs you have now ?
i suppose wieghts a re stamed with a code of some kind and springs are different colors ? just curious, my 84 Z28 shifts immediately after takeoff into 2 and 3rd right after that under 25mph, but thenm its 3.73 car, so... is in 4th gear by 40mph, tv cable is tight ands it iwl kiock down if you get on it halfway down, all the way down is too much car too fast, lol and 2-3 shift is getting spongy... dunno why... i added a bit of brake fluid to help swell seals etc in tranny, seems to be making 2-3 shift better now, may add a bit more soon
