SLP torsen thrust plate orientation. Which way?

I have an slp torsen take-off unit and I need to know which way the thrust plate goes into the differential. Does it matter?

Yes I know this thread is 10 million years old but I need to know the same thing (clearly I searched this!)

Which way does the thrust plate in a torsen install? The slot in it is angled so it clearly has a right and wrong way to be installed but I can't tell which...it fits both ways

The thrust plate is the loose piece in this pic that keeps the side gears apart

IIRC, it can only go one way and still have the bolt retain it.

I understand that it only fits one way lengthwise, such that the bolt retains it through the hole in the loop part that extends from the casting, but I think it can be flipped across its shorter dimension and still install either way. This would affect whether the angled slot is angled into or away from the direction of rotation of the diff.

Doesn't matter. Both wide grooves are radial from the axle centreline and uncurved.

Whereas a vented brake rotor with curved vanes is a left or right piece based on airflow, one with straight uncurved vanes goes on either side.

Similarly, the splash lubricated differential is not going to receive further lubrication, nor will installed strength vary with the retainer paddle facing either side.

You might be well served to place an advert in our site's classifieds.

Go to the message board (where you found the Transmission and Drivetrain forum to post in) and scroll down.

Good luck with your project.

I remember a thread on here some years back where a guy actually had a machine shop fabricate one for his Torsen. Maybe try a search in the Trans/Drivetrain forum using "Torsen Paddle", and you might be able to locate it. If you can track that guy down, he might be able to machine one for you. Kind of a longshot, but you never know!

Thank You Pat, I will see if I can find that thread and hope he still exists. I never in my life would have thought this would be such a hard part to find.

Re: SLP torsen thrust plate orientation. Which way?

Yeah, trying to find just the "paddle" part without the rest of the differential really is a PITA! Although I doubt it'd do any good, you also might want to try asking the parts counter at a dealership if there's any way to order a replacement paddle. If you can't locate a paddle anywhere, the next best option would be to do a weekly search on ebay for "torsen". I've found them as cheap as 50 bucks on there every once in a while, especially if it's a 2 series carrier, since most people want the 3 series. I'm pretty sure the paddle is the same for both carriers.
