Bouncing Speedo with Dakota Digital install!

I just installed my Dakota Digital box with my T56 swap yesterday. It seems that when I'm idling the speedo needle bounces, and if I rev the engine in neutral it acts just like the tachometer. Have any of you other guys had this problem??? IF SO, how did you fix it?? It seem like electro interference.

Thanks,

Double check your grounds. Sounds like a ground interference problem. Mine never did what you describe.

I've checked my grounds and I even tried running a chassis ground to the grnd. input on the SGI. It doesn't change anything. It's a weird problem. I wonder if shielding the VSS out put wires from the tranny would help?

Did you run them in a twisted pair? The only time my needle moves is when I first turn the key on. Also where did you get the power from? Make sure you have 12 volts on the box itself, but you probably did this. I had to change my power point, I had 12 volts but when I hooked the box up it dropped to 5, so I had to get it from a different spot.

No I didn't run them in a twisted pair. I think I'm going to try to do that and also shield them

BottledZr28, how do you have the dip swithes set????

What the hell I'll bring this one back from the past.

I'am having this problem also, I was using the Cyberdine calibration box and it started doing the same thing so I bought and installed the Dakota Digital box thinking this would fix this problem but its still doing the same thing. Since this is a old post you guys must have figured it out buy now what did you do? or if someone else knows how to fix it please chime in, thanks.

I had a little bit of a problem with this when I had the VSS buffer from the 165 MAF ECM setup still in the car, but a month or so after I swapped to the 730 SD system I decided to try using the on board VSS buffer in the 730 ECM and it never did it again.

My initial install had the VSS and box grounded seperately and the wires obviously not in a twisted pair.... It bounced quite a bit then... Like up to 20mph or so and pretty much all of the time when the vehicle was stopped. Then I brought the VSS ground up to the SGI-5, twisted the wires together, taped them heavily, and loomed them and it helped. After that it really would only bounce up to 5mph or so and not very often so I wasn't all that worried. But getting that external buffer out of the equation is what really solved the problem. I got after that "mod" because I was getting sick of seeing the mess of wires and whatnot that is the buffer module when I was tuning the PROM. Plus it weighs like a good 4-5 ounces!!!

The 730 has inputs and outputs (IIRC) for 2000, 4000, and 8000 PPM (same thing that the yellow external buffer can do that they used on the 165 cars).

Well my car is converted to the 730 computer, but I can't remember if I bypassed the buffer or not(its been awhile), I will have to check, if not I'll try what you did. Any others have any suggestions?

Wait, I'm a little confused. What is the external buffer you guys are refering to? And where is it located?
.
Matt87GTA,
Are you saying once you removed the buffer, the bouncing speedo went away?

The external buffer is a little yellow box. It just converts the signal from the trans to what the comp/gauge needs. I used the stock style yellow buffer when I converted my 85 T/A to a 140 speedo. Then when I swapped in the T56 I got the dakota digital. I used the same wires, and just connected them to the appropriate spots on the dakota digital box. Mine has always worked smooth with no problems. You do have one of your trans sensor wires run to the ground right. I just have it in the ground spot on the dakota digital along with the ground wire.
