sorry to clutter up these boards with some non thirdgen material, but I don't know where else to go! this is regarding a tranfer case problem with a '93 Chevy 1500 (full size Blazer) 5.7 L,automatic 4x4. I'm hoping to get some links to good Chevy/GMC 4X4 boards or just hear from someone who has had a similar experience with a similar viehicle or just knows whats up anyways.
Here's the problem: the truck is normally driven in 2H,recently it started making a grinding mechanical noise while in motion, this was said to be the gears disengaging by the first mechanic to chack it out.
oddly enough,it works perfectly fine once the 4H position is selected.....it's my friends truck and he continues to drive it never exeeding 45 mph.
the transfer case functions independent of the tranny, right? the problem can't be too bad if all 4 drive wheels work....we're hoping!
thanks everyone!

I might have an aswer for you. My 89 silverado had this noise you describe. It ended up being the chain in the transfer case. They get loose after time and start to slap the housing. If you let it go long enough it will ruin the housing. The chain is moving all the time does not matter if you are in four wheel drive or not. Four wheel drive will make the sound less noticeable because it tightens the chain with a load. I bought the chain at the dealer for 225 and installed it myself. The transfer case is not to complicated just keep track of the order it all comes out and don' t brake anythjing because it is all expensive and hard to get a hold of. Last but not least there is no gasket so you have to use copious amounts of RTV to put the halves back together. Hope this helps
