Rearend Question

Can someone please tell me why on my 86 (which is confirmed by the VIN#) there is an 87 rearend on it? As far as I know the original owner never changed the rearend and when I was pulling the V6 and tranny out yesterday I wanted to see what I had for a rearend and when I got looking in my book the year the rearend showed up for was an 87 and I can't quite understand why it has an 87 rearend on can someone please help?

Midnight auto parts swap?

Pretty easy to see, somebody somewhere along the line has swapped it. Probably a dealer warranty thing or something.

So, the reason your car has a different rear end, is pretty simple. Somebody swapped it.

How do you know it's a 87 rear? What difference would it make? Is it the right gear? If it's really a 86 HO car, that's fairly rare, and it probably would have had a 3.70 9-bolt. Definitely a high desireability type of piece. It would, of course, not have the disk brakes that work; but other than that, a very sought-after part.

Oh wait.... you have a 6-cyl car, not a HO car. Forget all that.

Ya my 86 is getting a transformation into an 86HO from my 83 Trans Am that had the L69 with 3.73ratio in it. But all I wanted to know was why there was an 87 rearend on my 86 the one guy that is helping me do all this overhauling said it could be a late production model that received the 3.42 87 rearend. Do you know if this could happen??

Who knows what GM did at times. Check your drivers side door sill for a tag with info on build dates and assembly plant. Might provide some info.
