Why not make a retro-fit bellhousing?
Instead of having to go through all the issues with putting a t-56 in a 3rd gen, why doesn't someone make a bellhousing that will bolt up to the t-56 and retain the stock clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, master and slave cylinders?
I'm sure its feasable.
wouldn't make swapping a T-56 a whole lot easier
simply the transmission, a bellhousing, and a crossmember

retrofit
Well, we're close. We have an input shaft, bearing retainer, adapter plate, and bolts that'll allow a '96 era T56 to bolt right into an early GM application. Pull out the old Muncie (26 spline), and stuff in the T56.
The kit is $600. Add an elec speedo, shorten the driveshaft, modify the crossmember, and you have a 6sp.
I'd have to check on using this with a 3rd gen though. I know Forte is working on it, just don't know where he is with it.

The Tremec aftermarket t56 has built in option for mechanical speedo and VSS, and can be drilled to mount directly to a t5 bellhousing, i think it's like 2200$

Well for 86-92 Cars, that wouldnt help any, the 93-97 setup will bolt right to the factory engine, spohn makes the crossmember, and it doesnt require modifying the driveshaft or torque arm.

I believe there is a guy in California that makes a bellhousing like you want. Bob something...buddy bought a bellhousing from him to put a T56 behind a Oldsmobile engine.
This guys kit uses a std. clutch. I think the issue would be that you have to shorten driveshafts and such because the bellhousings appear to be the same thickness of the T5 bellhousing. I would rather just use the LT1 stuff...as I am currently doing. I don't see a whole lot of extra pain going this route vs. retrofiting T56 hardware. Clutches are more expensive...but not too bad.
