Locker kits

Year One has a locker kit for "non-limited-slip" rear ends for about $369. Is that a deal to buy so i can turn my one wheel burn out into a posi? It says it locks mechanically when going straight and unlocks when taking corners, is this a deal or should i find better?

Ahh, yes the "grenade" lock. Theres been a few other threads about it. Do a search and you will see what I am talking about. You will be better off with a normal clutch type posi unit from auburn or eaton. They run the same price...around $350-400. Auburn has a stronger "pro-series" which is $475.

grenade lock? as in it blows apart or breaks easily?

And i looked at eaton's posi units, how does that work? just remove everything and place the new unit in?

Yes, they have a tendancy to break on heavy acceleration (the internal governor and the case). In order to install the posi unit you have to have it properly set up. I would recommend finding the best shop in your area to do it as it can get expensive if it isn't done right the first time.

IMO, these guys are the best. You will like a clutch type posi better than a locker, they pop and raise all kinds of hell and IMO are a general PITA, on the street.

You would need a 3.23 and up carrier and of course a set of gears. I would also recommend getting a 28 spline carrier and aftermarket (Moser, Strange, etc.) 28 spline axles which are stronger then the 26 splines I imagine you're running.

Please forgive my stupidity for a second...

what is a carrier?
i know what the splines are and it's that ring looking gear, is the pinion the bolt that turns the splines?
And isn't there like a stupid persons version guide to this stuff? i did a search and i got lost big time. pics would help...

The carrier is the posi unit itself. Yes its the grey piece.
The splines are on the axles- at the end where they slide into the posi unit.
The ring gear should be self explanitary-its the circular gear.
The pinion is the mushroom shaped gear that turns the pinion.
I don't have any pics, sorry, there are plenty at www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com

the pinion gear they point to in that pic is for the spider gears inside the carrier, not the ring and pinion.

so if i buy a complete set that includes everything, the carrier, the whole works, it should just be able to slip right into my axle given it's the right size (7.5" or 7.625") ? even if i went from a 26 to a 28 spline and from a 2.92 to a 3.23?? i think those are the last questions...

Yeah, let me give you a list. It's easier to order stuff right when you can call a company and personally talk to some one to make sure you get all the right stuff.

You will need:
3.23 and up carrier for 28 spline axles
28 spline axles for you're year/make etc.
3.23 gears
install kit-hope this new addition doesn't throw a twist in anywhere...its just all the new bearings and shims that are needed to set up the rear.

Just tell whatever person you talk to what you are doing. I got very good service at Moser.

If you want to keep the 26 spline axles that is fine. 88 and up carriers have the 28

well i've got a 1983 camaro, so idk if i want to shove a 28 spline in it, maybe just leave it original 26, unless it makes it stronger with the 28....

maybe i could just put the 28 in there if there's no difference in performance/strength/price...any comment would help

the locker i had in my car was really nice on the street. you could only hear it when i pulled into a parking spot a little too fast. it was kind of a bear going around a turn too fast, as it would try to force you to the outside of the turn, but all-in-all, it wasn't a bad deal.

did i mention i got this locker for free? this is the only way i would run one. i had quite the encounter a little over a week ago at the track. musta brought some water up with me to the starting line from the burnout box, cause i lit the tires (brand new M/T ET Street Radials) hard to about 6k, then when they grabbed, they wheel hopped like a SOB! then, well, here's the pic:

hehe, i'm upgrading to a 28spline eaton unit with moser axles, and a new cover with pre-load bolts to reduce flex. probably be done with the swap by the end of april.

well, when it comes time, you'll wish you'd spent the extra $30 on a real posi unit!

Did you even look at the reider racing website? It explains all of this including the types of units.
