I am clueless about transmissions, my only downfall to car knowledge, i recently bought a 1988 iroc-z 5.7L 350TPI and it was all original and stock when i bought it. However, i do not know what type of transmission it has, i know it is a 4-speed auto. Also, when my car's gear changes from 1st to 2nd, it has a BIG kick, especially when going slower, is this normal?

Sometime in the near future, i want to swap my transmission to 6speed manual, but i do not know:
-which one
-if its a good idea
-cost?

If anyone can help me answer these questions i would be more than satisfied. THANKS!!

700r-4 trans may have shift kit.

More likely than a shift kit is an improperly adjusted TV cable.

so my car has a 700r4 transmission with a shift kit? is that why it kicks? is this normal? also how about the question about getting a 6 speed manual to fit to my 350tpi?

The best advice you can get on both topics probably is to use the search feature. You will learn a great deal about both. Click it and type in things like "T56 swap" for the 6 speed swap, and "shifts hard" for the current issue you have. You learn a great deal when you use the search feature. Probably more than anybody can tell you in this thread alone. I'm not saying making a thread on something is a bad idea, but there is a great deal of info already here that will help a great deal also.
