Worth getting a posi?
I got an 85 z28 auto, i think it has the 3.08 gears(if thats what stock is). And I wanted to know if its worth getting a posi. I do have trouble with traction now, would this make a difference.
Also, is there better gears i could get? Just looking for something faster, sorry if this doesnt make sense, i dont know much about rearends and whatnot lol. Thanks

Yeah it will help traction. It could be argued that exhaust and intake are better first mods, but it is my theory that if you can't get it to the ground, then whatever you do matters only little more. I cut .7 sec off of my 1/4 mile times after Auburn pro install. I did all the other mods before and went up in smoke until the LSD. Still smoke but now drag radials 275/50/15 should be the final link to 13 sec runs. Get hooked up.

Go to reider racing website ,auburn or eaton website. And then to Detroit Locker, that is what the big boys play with.

they are really a must have if you like donut, beatyfull burnout and fast start also changine the gear is a good idea ... but if your going used, you must absolutly use the pinion and gear that came from the same car or simply go for new stuff
sorry for grammar but im french

Yes, worth it now or whenever you do add more power. Once you do add a significant amount of power it is a neccessity.
Putting a posi in is not easy to do successfully for the do it yourselfer. It's a good idea to get a trusted shop to do it.
The posi 99% of the time is the carrier. The only time it isn't is if you do like me and get a power trax type limited slip locker. I love it, but some don't. Clicking doesn't bother me turning corners. But if you get a regular posi it's a good idea to do the gears at the same time. With the 700r4 gearing, I'd go up to at least 3.41s or 3.73s with a carbed motor.
There is also the option of finding a fouth gen rear complete that already has posi in the junkyard or in the classifieds. There is a tech article on the swap on the home page of this site.

Another question. I forgot to mention i wasnt planning ondoing this myself, dont wanna mess anything up lol. How much would a shop want to install a posi and gears? On average

it take me and a experienced friend like 1 hour to do .. but i had the posi/gear ready. it isen't that complicated, the only dificult thing to do is the adjustement, but if the gear/pinion are strait, you just have to put back the same shim, tight evryting, close the trap put oil and forget it lol its a GM after all !!

The cost around where I live varys widely. The main place in town everyone seems to go to charges around 200 bucks for labor. But then there are guys spread out all over the surrounding area that are good at it that will do it for as little as 50 bucks for labor. The expensive part is getting the posi and to a lesser extent the gears.

Yeah its definately worth it. Weeeeee!!!
But seriously, if you already have traction problems, then you dont want to be adding more power and making the problems worse. You want to focus on getting the power to the ground and the posi/lsd will make a huge difference. Suspension setup and tires also make a huge difference. The cheapest way to do it is find a used rearend with posi at the yard and then sell the stock open rearend. But also depends on what brakes you want, what ratios you want, etc, etc. Might be a better choice to build what you have depending on what you want and what you can find at the junkyard. Make sure you know how to check for posi before buying anything!!

yup worth it, just make sure you gear according to your motor n tire height (if u want best 1/4 times) or i ur worried about gas millage or top speed. Just take that into account.

why not search your local papers or bone yards for a posi rear from a WS6 car?
stand a good chance of getting 3:42's and all you have to do is swap the rear itself
a posi definately helps as do gears and LCA's

Any of the third gens pre 88 with a posi should drop in, i believe it was 89 and up they changed from 26 to 28 spline axles.

Also shouldnt any 10 bolt 7.5" 26 spline fit anyways?
Im not sure exactly what other models would have them but i would assume any of the mid sized rwd cars would be a candidate for a 10 bolt, but if GM rarely put them on camaro's i doubt itll be easy to find it on a family car

4th gen F-body posi's should drop in if you have 28 spline axles (aka 90-92 10bolt). I think they are eaton posi units, but not sure. SLP used to sell those posi's for $99 with 0 miles (came from SLP modified F-bodies) but those days are long gone. You can still find posi's in the yard though, try to get one with low miles. I got a 40K mile '00 SS rearend w/ 3.4x posi and LS1 disc brakes for really cheap. Gonna remove the LS1 brakes and stock posi and use em for my 10bolt in my 91Z, then I'm gonna sell the '00 SS rearend 3.4x gears, axles, and housing and hopefully make my money back.
