uhh...my tranny mount is a PITA to find???

My car's been vibrating for a while so I took it up to my mechanic to look at it, telling him specifically to look at the u joints and the mounts cuz I had this feeling my issue lied somewhere in that area. So he tells me I need to replace my tranny mount (xmember to tranny) so I think ok that's fine, my dumbass friend welded half the mount to the tranny so I knew that needed to be done eventually but then he comes across this issue: no parts stores has a mount for my car. He had found out (as well as me) they used a certain mount for 88-89 5spd trannys that dont line up with any other tranny mount. The only place who had it was a dealership in portland who wanted 170ish for it. Does this sound right? I know my mechanic extremely well, I know he wouldnt rip me off but that seems way too F'ing high for a tranny mount. I know napa among other places tell me that the auto mounts should fit my car but they also say the larger bodied starter heat shields will fit my (smaller) starter as well, and a V8 clutch disc will work in my V6 motor unless I ask about teeth. I did call B n B auto, they told me they dont carry that mount and virtually no one does. I told my mechanic I wanted to go junk yard hopping before I do end up getting it, unfortunately its been raining for 3 weeks now so most of the junk yards = lakes. He told me I can drive it as long as i baby it, only Im sure I heard something come apart a few blocks from home (looks like the tranny is sitting just a wee bit lower too)

He did undo the welds that were holding the mount to the tranny cuz he was fully intending on replacing it til he found that out, so Im not sure wtf is keeping in up there. I need help. I hate not being able to drive my car half the time over something small like this.

I'm unsure from your description what you're exactly speaking of. Check the following link and provide a bit more info:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=327912

You'll note that there are two types of cross members, a one-piece and a two-piece. Which is yours?

Only 1 Xmember, unless if in some way the second was "lost" in the process of the car being put back together a couple yrs ago. I do know the tranny seems to sit higher than it should and there's a nice gap around the shifter (can see the ground from the inside if I pull the shift cover off) Kinda put into account the mount's been bad for a while for the reasoning of this mess.

87-89 "F" Engine and Trans mount (LB8)

Support, trans (cross member) 14094483. This is not a good number on GMpartsdirect, but your dealership might be able to find it--I saw one at a yard I visited today.

Mount Assembly (88-89) 14106633. GMpartsdirect shows it at $102+--normally $179. GMpartsdirect will cost you an arm and leg, but the total cost will probably still be less than your dealership.

That's a pretty familiar problem actually.

You've got the infamous "fluid filled" mount. It's mega$$$$$ to replace, and uses a weird crossmember, that you can't just put a regular mount on. I've heard that the right mount is getting near impossible to get at any price; the stealerships are frequently all out of stock on it. I'd get rid of it if at all possible.

Go the the junkyard; get a crossmember out of a 84-92 Camaro or Firebord, that looks different from yours; doesn't matter how it's different, as long as it's different, that means it won't be for the "fluid filled" thing you've got; and then you can use the $8 mount the rest of us use. Or, you could get a polyurethane one if you want.

This is a different issue from the 1-piece / 2-piece crossmember issue. You can use either of those 2 varieties, actually; just as long as it's not the same as the one you have.

Remember, as long as it's from 84-92 F car and it's different from yours, that's all you need to know.

thats what I was hoping not to hear, that it was the liquid filed one. The only deaership at the moment who has it is in portland and I'd still be looking at a week or so to even get it much less install it and I REALLY dont want to pay 170 for it.

I was hunting thru a couple junkyards earlier and not one camaro/firebird I stumbled across was even a stick, so I started wondering if I could just switch xmembers, cuz from what Ive read there's essentially no difference in the t-5 trannys (casing wise) so that makes me happy that I can just switch the xmember and be done with it.

Now one more question: does the crossmember I pull need to be from a t-5 or can it be from an auto?

Hmm can I use one out of an 82? Originally has the metric 200 tranny in it? My friend has this sitting (its slowly becoming my parts car) and offered to let me steal anything I needed off it.
If not I have to wait til fri, at least I get paid weekly!

Hmmm.... is 82 within that range?

82 will not work, because it's in a different place in the car from the 83 (most 83 anyway) and up. Some 83 cars still had the early mounting location (for the 200 auto and the 4-speed). Very very few 84 cars still had that. So, look for 84-92. Not 82 unfortunately for you.

Once again, the 1-piece vs. 2-piece crossmember IS NOT the issue you are facing. It DOES NOT MATTER which one of those 2 you get. They are completely interchangeable, with respect to your situation. Just as long as you get one from 84-92 Camaro or Firebird that's NOT FOR THE "FLUID-FILLED" MOUNT, it will do what you need.

Yes you can use one from an auto trans car; it is the same as the one from a stick car. The crossmember and mount are both the same.

heh yeah I know 82 isnt 84-92, but curiosity kinda made me wonder why I couldnt use one from the first 2 yrs. Im also known to ask more questions than needed, so I dont have to go back and forth on locating the right part. Ive learned in the end the extra 4 questions can save me hrs of anger.

Thanks for everyone's help, Im gonna be fixing my car on sat, hopefully it wont rain!

that's it. Looks off (compared to other tranny mounts, donut shaped thing that's supposed to sit in the hole) the mount doesnt even sit in/near the hole. Or didnt at least, I think after my mechanic undid the welds I made it drop lol.

What kind of F-body do your have? Motor, transmission and year? There may not be that piece in your instance.

The V8 transmission mounts did not have one. The thread starter has a 2.8L V6 engine.

Depending on which crossmember you actually have, you may not need part 11.

Look at the hole right in the middle. If it's a slot, about 1½" long and ½" wide, you don't need #11.

If it's a single round hole about 2" in diameter, you DO need #11.

Crossmembers that need #11 are far less common, and if they do, it's almost always still there (no real reason to ever take it apart); so most likely, you're not going to need it.
