what to look at when buying a used rearend?

Engine: 356 4-bolt
Transmission: Borg warner T-5
what to look at when buying a used rearend?
im going to look at a few rearends this weekend, i would like to know what i should be looking for besides broken, chipped, or cracked teeth? how can i test the posi to see that it will perform well? any tricks? any tools i should bring?

nothing special needed, just a regular socket set....i dont know of any ways to *test* a posi....take the differential cover off and look inside....make sure it isnt an open rear end...
check for a weird wear pattern on the teeth, check the rear pinion seal and make sure it isnt leaking....
