AXLE Code Decipher
TGO Guys,
Been working on getting the Speedo Recalibrated on my son's Z-28 and had to pull the axle to verify the gearing. Thanks to a good TGO Friend we've ordered the proper gears (45 tooth & 15 tooth) and should have the speedo working properly tomorrow eve. During the process I found that the Gearing was not standard for an '82 Z-28 (41:11 = 3.73).
I decided to verify the axle code and found that it is also not listed in my shop manual for an '82. Obviously a previous owner changed the entire axle assy. I have performed a search looking for an Axle Code Decipher and found nothing. Does anyone know of an Axle Code Decipher or can anyone identify this number:
6JK C221 2
According to the '82 Shop Manual:
AXLE CODE IS 6JK - 1986??? Limited Slip? Standard?
The "C" Should be the manufacturer - Chevrolet?
The "221" is probably "February 21st."
The lone "2" is probably the "Second Shift"
I want to determine if this axle came equipped with a 3.73 or if the gearing was changed. I'd also like to know what this axle came out of.
Thanks for any assistance,
Kurt

Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
6JK = 1984, 3.73, open diff (no posi)
At least that's what originally came in that housing. That doesn't mean whoever put that in the car didn't change the gearing to something else.

Going into the tech data, in 1984, a couple of third gens had 3.73 gears without a posi.

Thanks for the responses
Thanks guys....
Atleast we know it came from an '84. I have visually checked (ie. COUNTED) the teeth on the gears and found the 41:11 stamp on the ring and pinion gears it is definately a 3.73.
When we first purchased the car (about 1-1/2 years ago) I replaced the axle bearings and seals. I wish I had been smart enough at that time to write down the numbers on it. I did need to replace the pinion shaft bolt as a previous owner had vice-gripped it or otherwise destroyed it's head using an improper or "Stupid" tool.
At the first real opportunity I will properly very the Pre-Load, Back-Lash, etc.
Sincerely,
Kurt
