Mechanical speedo w/ 4L60E question

Anyone ever have any luck getting your mechanical speedo working with the modified tailhousing and reluctor ring setup for your 4L60E or T-56 from Stealth Conversions? It's all availible on jagsthatrun.com I guess you have a few different options, All can be done without having to remove the output shaft from the tranny. but there's one where you tap your tranny case for the vss sensor and relocate your reluctor ring. Then you buy a clamp assembly that holds your speedo gear in place. I'm assuming you can use a stock 700R4 tailhousing with this application so the speedo cable has somwhere to go.. They say its the least costly of the 2 options. The other is a bit more costly, but you buy an already modified tailhousing for your vss sensor, no drilling involved, then you relocate your reluctor ring and it connects to the speedo gear. I believe it also has a place for your speedo cable to plug into or they wouldn't even sell it. correct me if I'm wrong anyone.. or give me your input on if this worked for you or what you did to get your mechanical speedo to work?
thanks

Does anyone even have a clue about what i'm talking about? There has got to be more LT1 swappers out there who are trying to get their mechanical speedo to work.

Car: Depends on what day it is..
Engine: Um, Chevy small-block
Transmission: One that shifts
Axle/Gears: Got those too...
I used the Abbott Cable-x on my T-56 swap. No tail housing mods required....

I used the JTR setup in my T-56.

It relocates the hole for the driven gear sleeve to the right place, instead of directly radial to the main shaft of the trans.

The T-5 speedo gear goes right on the T-56 main shaft, EXACTLY the same as the T-56 reluctor ring. Pop the one off, stick the other on, done in 30 seconds. Then, the modified tail housing from JTR holds either the cable speedo gear sleeve or the VSS, just like it would be in the T-5.

I don't know how you could do that in the 4L60E however, since that trans needs the ECM to shift it, which in turn is expecting the T-56's 40,000 pulses per mile or whatever it is, for its vehicle speed info. Seems like for that situation, the ONLY solution would be the Cable-X box; which is basically just a little electric motor that spins the cable at a speed based on the VSS pulses.

No problem. Toughest thing you will have to figure out is where to mount the box...it is like 1 1/2" h x 3" w x 4" l.

Wiring is pretty simple- 3 wires, then set the dip switches and away you go.

Alright... Well, I feel I'm taking the road less traveled by here.. but I'm gonna go for it. For a car that i just plan on selling.. i really didn't want to splurg on all the bells and whistles to make the gauges work with this LT1/4L60E combo. No matter what.. auto meter gauges were gonna be nasty expensive, like $350 or more... a cable-x box was $300 and a modified tail housing from JTR.com was around $300. So.. I decided to have a little more hassel for a little less cost. I yanked a threaded vss sensor from a 95 4x4 chevy truck at the junk yard.. and I'm going to drill and tap the 4L60E tranny case, just before it bolts to the tail housing. thats where i will put my threaded vss sensor. I bought a reluctor ring kit from JTR.com $94 Once my vss is in I will line up my reluctor ring on the main output shaft and it has a special clamp to hold it in place. I also bought the speedo gear $69 with the correct amount of teeth in conjunction with my rear end ratio, tire size, & wheel size. Then I had to buy a speedo gear clamp to hold it in place. $35 I'm also using a 700R4 tail housing with the Mechanical driven speedo housing already in it.. my total cost with shipping $204. Lets hope my hassel of putting this stuff in is worth my $96 savings... something tells me its not going to be... I'll let ya know how it goes.

I bought a cable-x box as well, but it has never really worked right. It prolly has something to do with my car not working right either, and I haven't had time to fix it, so I don't drive the thing. Very sad situation indeed.

Hi,
You said it never work right. So what it do or not do. You have to realize that the old mechnical speedometer is about 20 years old. I would not expect the combination to work as good a an electroinic speedometer.

In my case I had an bounce at low MPH before the conversion. The amount of bounce in my speedometer actruly went down after the conversion. I thinking that I may remove my speedomter this winter and send it off to get it rebuild. Getting it rebuild may fix the rest of the bounce problem.

If your problem is calibration then you need set the switches on the cable-x unit dependent on your tire size and rear end ratio of your car.
