700R4 wont go into Reverse...

I drove my IROC to work today, after it had been sitting for a few days while I was out of town. Backed out of garage and driveway fine, got some gas on way into work, then proceded to back up in parking lot at work, and no go!! I didnt rev it up much, then went forward a bit and drove in a circle, and tried it again, and no rev. The shifter moves fine, just sits there and kind of loads up when in rev. After work tried it again, and no rev. Also 1st gear does not seem to be working. I think it starts out in 2nd. 3rd and OD seem to work fine. I didn't run it hard at all coming home. But re-confirmed that rev wont go. Also in N seems to make a funny spinning noise.

Car has about 72,000 on it, and had the Transgo shift kit put in 5 years ago around 59,000. A year later had the 1-2 shift softened up a bit, since my shop had it banging 1-2 pretty hard. But even up to now, you still knew when it shifts 1-2, as it jerks the car even at part throttle. So that is how I know (today) that 1st is not working, since it does not bang, and car accelerated somewhat slow. So it starts out in 2nd gear IMO.

So sounds like it is time for a rebuild? I read that 700R4's can go anytime, but only give you little problems before it dies altogethor. I been thinking about a new TC anyways. I guess now I have a real reason to put one in!

Car has been to strip a few times, and I run it hard some, but not all the time.

Hello....nobody has any comments? I heard that 1st and reverse use common parts in the 700R4? Is is ok to drive it? I think I will just park it till spring, and research a new TC over the winter. Is this a common problem?

hey bro i just had my trans rebuilt and after 40 miles mine started the same thing and if both 1st and reverse is not working than its either your converter and your pump! as check and see if it has a wine while it is in park or neutral. then it is the converter or pump. hope it helps Later Daniel

Yea Dan I do get a "whine/spinning" noise in neutral like you said. That was after going from P to R to N. In rev is just sits there and kind of loads up the motor. I only took it up to about 1500 rpm. I was gonna put a new TC in it anyways, when I got the extra cash.

That sucks you just rebuilt it, and now you got more problems. I would be checking with the guy who built it.

Might be a real stupid question but have you checked for proper fluid level and all. Also have you checked to make sure you have the shift linkage properly working?

I had this problem on two 4L60E's which as far as I know are children of the 700R4 tranny. If you search on Google you'll find info about the problem. As I recall it was the tranny trying to select two gears at once and it destroys the sun gears. Rebuild time.

Another thing you should try, is take it to a mechanic and have them test your shift silinoids. This is a comon prob with the 4l60es...and the tranny u have is pretty much that. It shouldnt cost much at all really.

Yea I checked the dipstick....full and red in color, and no leaks. The shifter works fine, will go thru all gear postions.
I did talk to my mechanic who did the shift-kit, and he said it could be the planetary gears going, and did not recomend driving it. He also said not to use OD if I could help it. But I should be able to get it to his shop, about 20 miles and not too many hills. I will do some more searching on the subject.

It's a well known problem with these tranny's. Do a search on Google for "reverse 4l60e planetary" and you'll find a bunch of stuff in the links.

At this point it's already broke so you can drive it to his shop. There are probably some updates to go in as well (were in my 4L60E's). Both my 97 Safari & 97 K1500 broke at about 115000km (~70k miles). Neither gave any warning.

As far as the rear planetaries going bad that will make a noise while in gear driving down the road because thats when they are turning. ask yourself this about what your mechanic said why would gears make noise when they arent turning? in park and neutral there stationary correct? my rear planetaries went out i got pics. its also i common problem for 700R4's that why i put a 5 pinion planetary out of 4L80E out of the ZO6 vette's C5's from PATC.com. By the way the guy who built my trans is a really good friend he wasnt sure that it was the converter so he went through the trans checking very clutches, bands, servos,(which are billet servo's from PATC.com). and everything was fine started looking into the converter and found the problem now i have to send it off to IL and im in FL plus ground shipping so its a waiting game and havent had the car for 5 months and counting. hope you find your problem! good luck Later Daniel
