Rear gear ratio w/T5
What gear ratio would be better to use, 3.42, 3.73 ..... I have/had 3.08 ( i think) in my stock open rear. And I had great power off the line to top end. Is there a formula to use with the tranny ratios and powerband of the engine?
Thanks
Thanks

Most board members recommend 3.23's or 3.42's. I've seen some guys running 3.73's, but I've also read posts where members say the 3.73's are a bit too steep with a T5, they're actually better suited for a T56 since first gear is 2.66. It's 2.95 in a T5 trans. I've been to a website that has a calculator for figuring out your starting line ratio (SLR), and the recommended SLR is between 10.1-12.1. You'll be within this range with 3.23 or 3.42 rear gears. I just found the website I was referring to. Go to www.5speedtransmissions.com and click on the link that says "New calculator: Calc distance travelled in first gear". This calculator will help you figure out your SLR with different rear end ratios.

I have 3.73s and like the ratio, makes taking off the lines that much more enjoyable. It think it really depends on how you like driving on the highway. I run 2100rpm at 65mph and 2500rpm at 80mph, but I have an LG4 version of the T5 with the .63 overdrive I think. Different years and cars came with a .74 overdrive. Around town I can putt around in 4th gear.
If you're building an engine with a strong mid to topend rpm range I'd say 3.73s are must. It puts the engine closer to its powerband.
