borg gear change any one done it

hi, i have a 2.77 posi 9bolt in my 86 trans am, well i bought a set of 3.27 gears and a pick up a 3 series carrier. when i pulled my rear apart both carriers are exactlly the same, guess my ebay 3 series was a 2 series, but both ring gears have the same number of teeth (36) only the 3.27 gear was thinner. so after messing around i found that the 3.27 11 tooth pinion fit with the 2.77 ring gear with the carrier shimmed almost al the way to one side and every things to seem to work fine no binds, backlash ect i cant drive the car as it has no motor in it but what's your oppinons on this? is somthing wrong were this wont work? thanks, Gary

Not too sure what you are asking? Are you asking if it it will "WORK"? I did a similiar swap 2.77 (2 series) to 3.73 (3 series) I think the numbers on the carriers are the same but if you stand them on end on a bench there is a difference in ring gear flange height.

if you did what I think you did, you just completely wasted your time. yes, the 3 series and 2 series carriers are different, the gears are different, different ratios will have different number of teeth, the list goes on.

a 3 series carrier will have the ring gear land moved inboard 1/4" when compared to a 2 series carrier. therefore, the 3 series gear is thinner as well as the pinion being a smaller diameter due to less teeth.

you can't simply mix and match gears either. they are made in matched pairs, a specific pinion goes with a corresponding specific ring gear.

by spacing the carrier over all the way, you have decreased the amount of spline the driver's side axle will engage in the side gear inside the pinion. as such, you are more than likely going to destroy the side gear the first time you get on it.

pull it back apart. use the correct gears with the correct carrier shims on each side.

I'd make sure to leave negative feedback for the ebay stooge that sold you that carrier if you haven't already. I bought a zexel-torsen carrier on ebay that supposedly had a 3.42 gear set included. It ended up being a 3.23 gear set, but at least the carrier was still a 3 series. Apparently the guy was too retarded to do the math on the ring/pinion tooth count!
