10 bolt drum question

My brother just bought a parts car, it has a 10 bolt with 4:10 gears and a new aftermarket carrier, theres only about a thousand miles on it, but its drum. he currently has dic brakes on his t/a and obviously wants to keep the discs. Will he have to take out the internals and swap them into the old housing, or is there a way that he can put the brakes on without swapping everyting out? Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks

Re: 10 bolt drum question

I'm no expert, but I have had both drum and disc on different cars and I'd say there would be a lot of fabrication to put disc brakes on a drum rearend. It would be a lot easier to change the guts of the diff. assuming they are both the same diff., example: both are 10 bolt 28 spline etc. If they are not the same then you are looking at a lot of work one way or another.

Re: 10 bolt drum question

I guess my question would be what year is the parts car. If it is a thirdgen T/A like he already has he can swap the brake system over to the other axel. there really isn't any fabrication needed since he already HAS all the parts. just need to unbolt the caliper brakets and such from the axel tube flange.

yeah, what he said. just be sure both are the same 9-bolt to 9-bolt or 10-bolt to 10-bolt. Easy either way but you will need backing plates if not the same assembly.

Re: 10 bolt drum question

You can modify the axle flanges on the drum rear to accept the disc brake backing plates. If you do a search on here, it was posted somewhere on here quite some time ago. It may even be located in the tech articles section somewhere. Basically, you have to cut off the top of the drum flange where the big hole is that the brake line passes through going to the wheel cylinder. Then you cut a 45 degree angle on the ends of the cut you just made. The last step is to measure where the top two holes need to be for the disc brake backing plate, and drill them. It really isn't too hard to do. Just make sure to measure twice and cut once, as they say. I was going to do this to my drum rear, but then I happened to come across a complete disc brake rear with good gears in it for the right price, so I didn't need to worry about it. Like the other guys said, you could always swap the guts out, but if you're not familiar with setting the backlash, pinion preload, etc., and you'd have to pay a shop to do it, it'd be far cheaper to just modify the flanges on the drum rear and not disturb the gears.

Thanks guys, i did find the article and thats what im going to do. It will be much cheaper and i wont have to mess around with re-setting the gears.
