Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

  • Just wanted a professionals eye to overlook the clutchpack setup I have. Is is sounding like its on track?
  • Reverse Input Clutches : Bottom to Top
  • Bellville Plate - .090" Original
  • Steels - .076", .078", .078", .079" These might be worn a little but close according to my instrument Originals
  • Frictions - .070" NEW Borg-Warner
  • Backing Plate - .244" #7 Selective Original
  • Snap Ring - .061" Original
  • CLEARANCE - .055"
  • OverRun Clutches :
  • Steels - .090" NEW
  • Frictions - .078" NEW Borg-Warner
  • Forward Clutches : Bottom to Top
  • Apply - .169" Original
  • Waived - .070" Original
  • Steels - .091", .090" Originals
  • Frictions - .070" NEW Borg-Warner
  • Backing Plate - .228" ID 'C' Selective Original
  • Snap Ring - .124" Original
  • I did have to buy a Steel since the last builder used 2 Waived plates and placed the 1st friction on it. I was sure this wasnt right and I corrected it.
  • CLEARANCE - N/A ( I stopped here and havent completed this pack) (sources say .040"-.063")
  • 3-4 Clutches :
  • I havent started this part yet. Ran outta time in the FWD clutch process. But here is what I got.
  • Originally : had a 6-pack, 5 Legged Holder, .190" Apply Selective #7 and a .093SnapRing
  • What I got new : 9 .062" B-W HighEnergy Frictions, 8 .060" Steels, 1 .125" Apply Plate.
  • Question about that. Do I use the .125" Apply on the bottom then a Friction then a Steel and so on?
  • At the top, I will end in a Friction if it is as asked above. So then the last Friction would ride under the .190" Apply Selective. Of course then the Snap Ring I have. Does that sound right?
  • CLEARANCE : Ive heard .040" - .060" Is this a correct range? And what is best to shoot for?
  • I appreciate any help on this...THX Michel

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

I went ahead and installed the 3-4 pack. Clearance with the 5-legged apply, then a .125 steel apply then .062 friction and .060 steels alternating that came in kit which leaves me with a friction last. Then with the orig selective .190 #7 and orig snap .093 I get pretty much NO clearance. So I replaced the top plate (selective .190) with one of the stock steels (from the 6-pack setup) which is measured .105 (I think..I should re-measure it) and my Clearance is .080ish. Is there any thoughts of how I should go about the stack? Ive heard you can leave out the bottom apply and use the 5-legged apply on the 1st friction. Then I could use the .125 I got in the 3-4 kit on top under the snap ring. But is it really safe to run a friction against the 5-legged apply or should I leave a steel there? What is the BEST clearance to have? I have access here at Superior Tranny to get different last steel thicknesses. THX

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

The 5 leg apply ring is to thin to even think about it. The .125" apply plate is needed to make this work, and I use this setup a lot. You will need a .062" snap ring to get the clutch clearance you want. Go to a transmission shop and see if they have one, if not, get a snap ring from a TH350 from them and cut off what is necessary to make it work, about 1/2-3/4 of an inch off of the end and use it here with the .190" top steel pressure plate. .035"-.055" clutch clearance is good here.

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

Ahhhh!!! Thank you Soooooo Much!! Not to be a pest but I just want to get it straight. 5-Legged Apply .125" Apply Plate .062" Friction .060" Steel Alternate until all Frictions and Steels are used. Will be a Friction last. .190" Apply/Selective #7 stock .062" SnapRing to replace the .093" SRing. So I am good with just purchasing the proper SRing? Sounds good 2 me. I greatly appreciate your time and response =)
Now I can finish =) YAY

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

  • OK. So I had no luck finding a .062" SnapRing without ordering it. But I had some ideas I wanted to run across your mind and see what you think.
  • First off I am focusing on what I have already and what is availible locally. I of course see that most setups have a thick Apply plate between the 5-Tang and the Friction/Steels set. Ans they most seem to get rid of the OEM Selective Apply up top under the SnapRing and use another thick Apply plate. Those are like .128" or .125" by the looks of most 'kits' I see.
  • My setup stock went as follows :
  • .093" SnapRing
  • .190" Apply/Selective #7
  • .080" Frictions X6 (estimated thickness with a digital caliper)(they were worn)
  • .107" Steels X6 (estimated thickness with a digital caliper)
  • .056" 5-Tang Plate
  • Note there was the 1st friction riding on the 5-Tang. It had been rebuilt B4, so I assume this was done by the builder.
  • ********************************************************************
  • My current parts are as follows :
  • .093" SnapRing
  • .128" Apply
  • .062"-ish Frictions X9 (B-W HiEnergy)
  • .060" Steels X8
  • --------
  • .056" 5-Tang Plate
  • Note this was given without another Apply (.128") and maybe from the assumption to reuse the .190" stock Selective.
  • **********************************************************************
  • With the last setup and using the .128" bottom and the stock .190" top, my clearance is NIL. In fact the stack is above the SRing groove by a bit. Using a stock .107" steel as a Apply makes it below but seems too much and is more than .072" Clearance.
  • So I was thinking I could do a second .128" Apply which is readily availible to me OR I could get a thinner SelectivePlate that is availible. The thinner stock-type SelectivePlate is .157".
  • Either seems to take up the gap and provide me with a resolution to tighten up the clearance.
  • Which is my best option? .157" Selective OR .128" Apply?
  • Again, sorry to be a pest but THX in Advance

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

You could not find a TH350 or TH400 snap ring (any transmission shop) to substitute for the .062 snap ring you would have to order? Call me tomorrow on this in the afternoon.

Not to question your expertise, but why wouldnt the other plates work instead? The snap ring will take 2-3 days and its $6.50 new. I can try one more tranny shop tomorrow.

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

personally, I would probably just get the thinner selective, if the thin snap ring was unavailable w/in the build time frame. - The selective would probably cost more, therefore the snap ring would be the simplest/easiest. If I had both in hand, I would probably run the thinner selective. It's not going to flex any more at the top than the .125 apply does at the bottom.

And yes, I have run a .125 apply plate in place of the selective before w/o any issues. - Alto reccomends .025-.040 on the 3-4 clearance, ATSG lists .060-.080, Dana just said .035-.055, I tend to shoot for around .050.

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

News : I picked up a .062 SnapRing from a good tranny shop today. It was FREE which is better than ordering the $6 New one. I went ahead and bought the #4 Selective (.157/.160) and the other .128 Apply from Superior. They were in stock. I just wanted them on hand. If I dont use either I can return them. Tomorrow I will be working on it and trying to resove this. Its the last thing and I am ready for completion. =) The middle was where I was shooting as well. ATSG is good but to me more 'stock' inclined and the stock plates are 5 or 6 packs. I have the ALTO instructions off-line and have listened to Dana's input as well. I had some other input that was similar too. I appreciate you input as well Shagwell. Wish me luck =)

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

OK, so I got the .062 SRing, a second .128 Apply, a AC Delco #4 Selective.
I tried a few different combinations and the only thing close to where I need it is the .128 Apply after the last Friction and the .093 stock SnapRing.
With this I get .050-.052 Clearance.
Is that good?

Re: Sound Right?? 700R4 Build

Yes, it should be fine. I shoot for .040" - .055" on the 3-4 clutch pack on a 700R4.
