700R4 Converter Selection
Have a 88' Formula 350 with a 700R4. Thinking about a higher than stock stall converter. It will have a mostly stock TPI with a cat back, MSD distributor and 6-AL, shorty headers. I'm working on a set of Engine Quest Vortecs 180 cc for this engine. Cam is a possibility. I need a lock-up converter right? Is it as simple as just installing the converter or are there other parts to make this work? Not talking about coolers or engine components.

Re: 700R4 Converter Selection
yep get a lockup and get a small converter, something like a 9-10 inch unit. they are more efficient. Spend the money on a decent one, its worth it. I love my Edge racing converters... i think they are still 500+ shipping these days, but not sure
With my bolt on L98, i went with a 2800 stall. Worked well enough to push that car to 12.90's. Launched harder than alot of more powerful cars out there. I was happy and it was streetable as can be.
I now have the same unit restalled to 3600 for my 383. So far i like it
Any stock to mild cam/heads motor should love 2600-3000 stall depending on what you want out of the car. Some strip time looking for good ETs then get alittle higher, like 2800 for a bolt on TPI car that sees some strip time or 2500-2600 for a more street driven daily TPI bolt on car
My 383 for mix between street/strip i went with 3600. could have gone 3800-4000 some say. More daily driver i would have chosen 3200-3400
as far as coolers go, its a nice addition but if you have stock cooler and arent racing it hard all the time you should be fine with stock cooler. i was

Re: 700R4 Converter Selection
When you say "bolt on TPI car", what exactly are you bolting on? I'm trying to get this thing to run 14.2 here in El Paso at 4200' elevation. First I need to tune it up and get it running right. I haven't been able to hook the car on the temporary strip at the airport we had so it has been running 16s. A track in New Mexico has a Modified class with a 14.50 break which I want to run when we start racing again in the fall ( no lights at track so they shut down for the hot summer months) I have 8 x 26.0 slicks for this car I have never tried. It ran 15.0 at Las Vegas a few years ago. So I'm trying to come up with a combo to deal with the higher altitude here. Thought a converter would help me get closer to where I want to be.

Re: 700R4 Converter Selection
i'm not sure what my old combo would do up your way, but when i say bolt on TPI, i mean intake upgrades and other small easy bolt on parts like pulleys, rocker arms, exhaust etc
I had a stealth ram intake, underdrive pulleys, 1.6 rockers, full exhaust/suspension, 2800 stall, 3.42 gear and 26x10 slicks and skinnies up front and ran 12.95 at 103.8 at 188ft Density Altitude. I'm at 1200 ft elevation but the air quality in the summer has the density altitude upward of 3000 ft. In those conditions my car ran 13.4's i think it was. If you got altitude of 4200 on todays weather conditions of 73 degrees and 30.02 inches of HG, then your DA would be 6256 ft. I would think my car would be mid lower 14's at that height but i have no idea.
NHRA correction factors put me at about second slower at 5500 ft and thats all they give for corrections. I'd be somewhere in the mid high 13's i think up there at 5500 ft. If i take my 3000 ft DA times as sealevel and correct to 3200 ft higher then i guess that is like correcting to 6200 and means my 13.4's become 13.90's so i'm not sure.
For you tho, i'd start with full bolt ons, prefferably HSR/Miniram/Superram or lastly a heavilysiamesed SLP runner tpi setup. HSR/miniram breath best and will respond well to cam choices if you need to upgrade cam alittle to reach your goals.
Try converter first tho. from stock with exhaust to full bolt ons you can not go wrong with 2800 stall

Re: 700R4 Converter Selection
Any mods to the 700R4? Govenor kit? Did you leave it in Drive or OD? Shift points? Did touch the servos? Any information is appreciated. thanks.
