700R4 Shifting to early, won't go past 4k at WOT
I wanted to ask you guys here since you guys, well 80% of you have an 700R4 transmission. I just went through all 4 pages of my search and found nothing that was similar to mine.
I traded my 87 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe with the guy in Florida for his rust free basically brand new 84 Monte. I am really happy of the trade but my Aerocoupe I was done with. It was mechanically perfect. I’ve been working on this car since I’ve brought it home 3 weeks ago. It has an 350 Jasper crate motor 700r4 with a shift kid and 8.5 Grand National rear with 3.42 gears.
Well, sorry for the long winded story. This is what is happening or has happened. He put on an Edelbrock Performer 600cfm on the car he traded with me about 2 weeks prior. Well here the Eddy was never made to run with a TV cable. So by the time I got the car home it stretched the cable out. I was unaware of this. I just thought the tranny was ready to go.
The car shifted really hard and I couldn’t figure it out for the life of me. Here it was because of the carb. So I put a Quadrajet on to see if it would shift better. Well at that point it was too late. The cable was shot in which I just ordered a new one and got it in 2 days ago.
So now I have an Q-Jet with the 700r4 and followed everything using this post : http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sum...o/700R4p1.html
Except for the welding and stuff, I mean, no matter what I do to the TV cable the best shifts At WOT the car won’t go past 3500rpm before it will shift. If I hardly hit the gas it shifts perfect and downshifts great. You punch it and it just does nothing, no downshifts, nothing!
I have this nice ride and it doesn’t go anywhere. It doesn’t seem like its slipping or anything. It just doesn’t downshift when you punch it (WOT) no matter where the slider is put.
What am I overlooking with the tranny?
I am really frustrated because I spent all this money on the Eddy to get that carb set right to make the 700R4 to shift right. That didn’t work so I rebuilt the Q-jet to get that on the car to get the thing to shift right and still it doesn’t shift right.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Re: 700R4 Shifting to early, won't go past 4k at WOT
Try disconnecting the TV cable and pull it out by hand to determine how far it travels. However far it pulls out, this is the point it needs to be at WOT when it's attached to the carb linkage. Anything less and the tranny isn't going to know the engine is at WOT and it will shift earlier than it should. Mount the TV cable mechanism so the attachment point on the linkage is past this point a little. Then follow this tech article on adjusting the TV cable from there.
The linkage also needs to start pulling the cable out as soon as it comes off the idle stop.
As long as everything is in good working order in the tranny, this should solve any problem related to the TV cable.
