how to upgrade my 10 bolt rear..

i have a peg leg 10 bolt diff. right now, and will soon be upgrading to a new 383 with well over 400ft/lbs of torque. i'd kill for a 9" f*rd rear, but its just way out of my price range... should i try to upgrade this one so it'd be strong enough, or go with a new one? seeing that tech articles in magazines are most often engine related, i dont konw that much about what all goes on inside the diff., or tranny for that matter. thanks for the help

I have a 10 bolt in my car now with 3.23 gears (was a 2.77 9bolt). I put in an Auburn Pro posi carrier and used the aluminum cover with the bearing braces and have yet to have any problems.

Sparks a flyin'.

I had a 9 bolt in my car but the 3.27 gears sucked. I built a 10 bolt with 4.10 gears similar to how Dan explains it on his page. I never got a chance to abuse it since the engine blew up first. This spring will be the real test with abig block under the hood. Theroretically it should hold up. The weak link will be the ring and pinion. I know someone with a 67 ford. It has a 28 spline 9" with factory axles. He launches with a transbrake hard enough to pull the front wheels off the ground. He says he pulls his axles occasionally to check for twisting and hasn't seen any yet. The 9" ring and pinion definatly has the advantage over our little 7.5/7.625 gears. If I break something in my diff, that's what's going to fail first after doing all the mods.
