Rear End!!! Help me I'm CONFUSED
I am working on a 86 Transam I am stepping up the rear end gears from 2.73 to 3.73. Until this morning I thought I had a 10 bolt rear end and afer tearing it all apart I found out I think I have a Australian 9 bolt The axels have no C clips holding them in and a 7.5 ring gear. My only problem is I have never heard of a Australian 9 bolt with 7.5 ring gears only 7.75 ring gear so my question is what rear end do I have and where can I get gears and instalation kit without replacing the whole rear end (I heard it was easier to replace the whole rear end with a 10 bolt but I want to keep the ausralian rear end the posi unit is goog and it is strong) so If you can help please help me thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I need it

ok first of all you have a borg-warner rear end that reqiures special factory-only gears(only through g.m.) avaliable in your choice of 2.73 or 3.73. i'd junk it and put a more affordable set-up in there. oh by the way the gears range from 400 to 700$ for just the ring and pinion! i know because my friend had the same situation.

Future mods 400 performer rpm intake (polished) and 600 edlebrock carb, comp roller cam, and way better heads. orpossibly a 383 stroker?

your only problem is to change from your 2.73 to 3.73 you will have to get a new carrier and they are only available thru a dealer ,shop around different dealers I think I paid around $500 some wanted $800,or you could get a carrier from a boneyard cheap, cars equipped with factory 3.27 gears can use the 3.73's on the stock carrier. Then you can get gears from Reider Racing(3.70's)about $300,the advantage to this is the 9-bolt is a stronger rearend than factory 10-bolts GOOD LUCK

Sounds like it is a BW 9bolt. If so, then you have a 2.77 gear. The other factory options were 3.27 and 3.45. The only aftermarket gears are 3.70. The 2.77 is one style carrier and the rest are another. I am going to Sydney next week and there is a place there that will ship to the US. The cost for a 3.70 gear set and the install kit is ~300 USD (when bought in Australia). Ausrs has talked to the company and we will be stopping by there. I don't know if they have carriers, but I will check on them too.
If you can find the gears here in the US it'll cost ~400 plus another ~300 for the install kit.

Thanks a bunch, there is only one problem, I measured the ring gear. It is only 7.5 inches. I thought the 9 bolt was 7.75. Have any of you actually measured the ring gear before? If so what was yours? Thanks again.
