700r4 issues

Car: 89 camaro
Engine: 305
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 2.73
700r4 issues
my tranny has 189,000 on it. and i dont really have the money to get it rebuilt. it shifts fine and doesnt slip when under light acceleration. but at medium the shifts become hesitant and sloppy. full throttle it wont hardly shift until i let off the gas pedal. would a shift kit or super servo fix that? or is it just time for new? and i have not changed the filter and fluid for about 2 yrs. i was gonna put b&m trick shift in it. i have heard good reviews on that. i have adjusted the tv cable.

well i dont know if a shift kit is gonna fix it but if u do get one get a transgo. dont even think about a B&M or in 500 miles you wont have a tranny that works at all. they notoriously destroy every tranny you put them in. ebay's got some rebuilt 700R4/4L60's for a couple hundred bucks if you can do it yourself.

really... thanks for the info. unfortunately i just put a b&m street strip kit in my 78 ford. i hope it holds up. i will keep that info in mind for the camaro though.

a corvette servo would tighten up the second to third shift, as far as the shift kit goes, i wouldnt put it in yet. try to give it a flush and filter change, that should help things out. try that out for alittle while and see if you still think you need the shift kit

you gotta watch out flushing them. sometimes they sorta build up their own shift enhancers with the little flakes of metal and other stuff that accumulates in there over time. really if its your daily driver and you dont have the money to put in a new tranny and it still moves from A to B dont bother it. granted if the fluid is burnt or its the original fluid it probably needs changed.
be warned if changing the fluid doesnt fix the problem start saving your money cause the clock just started ticking.

If the fluid looks good leave it alone. The Corvette servo and larger boost valves will help, but the Sonnax super servo, (not the billet) will do more than even the Corvette as far as the 2-3 WOT shift. I have these and all the necessary updated seals for the servo. If this does not solve it, it will be time for a rebuild in the future. Yes, you can reuse the servo and boost valves. Dana

when they start shifting like that start looking for a new one it wolnt be long befor 4th goes out ,and if you want it to last any time at all DONT FLUSH IT with that kind of milage on it it will take out the sluge that holds the seals together , i beleive you said it had allmost 200k on it , a shif kit will only destroy what is left of the clutches ,you are beater of finding a reman and doing work to it

i would say flush it as a last resort. although there is a chance that it could get worse, a flush sometimes can bring a tranny on its last leg, to operating almost back to normal. like i said, id save the flush till your tranny develops late shifting problems. and by that i mean, when u put it in D from P and it takes 1 or 2 whole seconds for it to actually kick in or into reverse, then id say thats a good time to flush it out. my old 700r4 that came in my car before i had it rebuilt. had about 150 000 miles on it, and it had delayed shifts, i managed to give it a flush and it lasted me maybe 3 to 4 more months before i had to get a full rebuild.

i had heard that flushing a trans can lead to certain death in some cases. i was just gonna change the filter and throw some trick shift in it to top it off. a buddy put that stuff in his 96 z28 and he said it would actually chirp second after that. it is definately time for a rebuild. im just tryin to prolong it. it shifts fine at light throttle. so i thought maybe the clutches might be ok. it was just maybe low fluid pressure. thanks for the info everyone. anymore info is still appreciated. cuz i havent touched it yet. im just babying it tell i can make up my mind. i would really like to get a t5 conversion. but that would have to wait till income tax season anyways.haha

funny i gave my 700r4 a flush at bout 75k miles, worked great for a few hundred miles then boom, when in d 3 gear did not work, it would take for ever to shift at any speeds or rpms and when it did it was rough. but when in o/d 3-4 gears worked great but was hell getting to them, no acc, rough shifts, slipped. tranny was stock, behing a 2.8 of all motors lol. reverse worked great. nothn done to the trans, 88 camaro. haha figure that one out.
