700R4 changed gears in Rear need advice
I changed the gears in my 91 RS to 3.42 from the stock 2.73. I changed the speedo gears too. Speedometer checks accurate but the car shifts to overdrive by 30mph. 25 if I am just putting around. It always has shifted early in my opinion (35-40 with stock gear)but now is unbearable. I readjusted TV cable with no help there. If I hold it to the floor it will shift around 4800rpm so I think the TV cable is fine. What can I do to get this thing to shift right. I want to make this trans last a year until I can chat with Pro Built about building me one to go in with my new engine plans. If I hold it to the floor it will shift around 4800 so I think the TV cable is fine.

Like I always say when you change the rear gear ratio or rear tire diameter you need to recalibrate the governor, it's driven off the output shaft, the driveshaft, change from 2.73 to 3.42 your driveshaft is spinning faster at the same vehicle speed there for it's going to shift at an earlier rpm, same mph maybe, If you want it to shift later use lighter inner weights or make your weights lighter and/or put in weaker springs, to make it shift earlier use heavier wieghts and/or stronger springs. In general governor springs (among other things)control shifts below 40 mph, weights control WOT shifts and shifts above 40-45 mph.
I've done several transmissions like this after gear ratio or tire changes, it helps to have a few spare governors or just get a B&M governor calibration kit. With a few hours of time and patience you can get the light throttle, full throttle and part throttle shifts very close to where you want them to be by calibrating the governor.

If the 4,800 rpm at WOT is where you want the shifts, do not change the weights in the governor. Work with the springs in the governor and TV cable adjustment. If you want later WOT shifts, change to a lighter inner weight governor.
Hope This Helps!!!
