Need expert opinion 700 problem within,

Since I had my trans rebuilt last year, the thing at high speeds or WOT always wants to go into 2nd gear. If I adjust the TV cable out a little it works, but the shifts are too soon and sloppy.

If I am at WOT from a dead stop the 1-2 shift is hard and on time (with correct cable adjustment). The 2-3 won't upshift at WOT. If I let off ever so slightly it shifts fine and firm. If I try to go WOT again at this point all I get is 2nd gear. I can go 3/4 throttle and its fine. I can adjust the cable way out and it shifts fine and holds 3rd up to 100-110mph just fine. Like I mentioned earlier, if I do adjust the cable out, the 1-2 and 2-3 are too early and soft.

Help. If it's something simple in the valve body or in the governor or servo I should be able to attempt the repair myself.

Thanks in advance. BTW- Its out of warranty.

What RPM does it go to when it won't WOT upshift? I sounds like you need a heavier governor but the thing is that it SHOULD have the light governor in it so unless it isn't the original trans I would suspect it would be upshifting in the 5000-5500 RPM range now. Is it going past that?

It'll hit the rev-limiter if I let it. I let it do it once, and don't want to do it again

The place that rebuilt it is where I used to work. I know firsthandedly that they screw things up all the time. In 10 trans jobs, 4-6 of them would come back for warranty work.

I know the owner is the only one certified in transmissions, while his brother is actually the bench man and is a real piece of work. Oh, I forgot to mention....they start drinking beers at lunch and are fallen over drunk by 6pm. They stay and work usually until 9 or so before going home.

So theres a little background ont he work that went into it. The reasons above is why I don't work there any longer, I can't tolerate people like that. Guess I just didn't fit in

Anyhow....I know that the torque converter is 2500 stall with lockup. I ordered it myself. The parts in the valvebody are all GM parts and everything else (band, frictions, etc.) is generic trans shop overhaul kit.

But the thing is, the trans is rock solid as far as slipping. Theres none at all. Sometimes I get a slight delay at part throttle on 2-3, but only when its hot. I think all of this is from unsufficient line pressure.

I need to have it gone thru again, but I need to know where to tell the bench guy to look for problems that aren't usually there on other overhauls. It seems to me that the bench guy screwed up somewhere (like he always does).

Thanks Leo for all of your input.

The only question I have would be why in the hell did you let these people rebuild it knowing all this? You have a handful of problems now. I would start off with the valve body and governor, the governor weights may be too light.
It shifts when you let off wot because it's no longer waiting for the governor signal, it thinks it's under no load.
I would adjust the cable out as you say and correct the shift feel with the governor calibration.

If this is the original tranny then I would have him first check line pressure/response. Look at the governor/bore for wear/sticking. I would install a TransGo Shift Kit, the full kit not the Jr. Kit. This comes with a full set of shift springs and governor springs and it will take care of allot of problems you could have from someone tampering with the VB. It will also correct the weak points in the tranny. You could also combine this with the TransGo Reprogramming Kit if you want true high performance operation but you need the basic SK installed. Make sure that there is at least a 553 servo istalled and use a .422 TV Boost Valve. Use a minimum .282 Intermediate Boost Valve.
