Best source to get a low $ T-56

I want to swap the 700R4 for a T56. Any ideas on getting one for less than $1500. A local shop says they will give it to me for $1500 + my 700R4. Is that a good deal or do I need to keep looking?

You got damn lucky finding a T56 for $500. I hope it works ok for you. I bought mine for $1500 including the bellhousing and some other stuff. That was a while ago before the T56 craze started, but that was an average price at that time. Now they are around $1100 - 1300 with the appropraite accessories. Get a 1994 or up one. They are better designed and have better ratios.

Check on Ebay, there's always a T56 or two on there. I would think that $1500 + your 700R4 is a little steep.

I wish there was a magical land where everyone could call and get an unlimited supply of T56's for cheap. But such a place doesnt exist. You have to call around to different salvage places, check the classifieds, both online and in newspapers, and do some footwork. And you have to be lucky.

I got lucky in finding a local guy who was parting out his 96 Trans Am. I had to pull everything off the car, but I got it all for $1000.

My sig doesnt say T56 yet, because I havent installed it yet. Maybe thats why bjankuski's sig says 5-speed too.

Just like Birmass, I got my T-56 before the craze. Like Kevin said, the VERY BEST way is to PULL it YOURSELF, that way, you get everything you need, plus you learn the valuable things that can and will suprise you when you are installing it. I pulled mine in early 1998, from a 1994 Z-28 for $1200 including gearbox, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch assembly, hydraulic assembly, starter, pedal assembly, shifter, all bolts, interior and exterior shifter booths, driveshaft ,and so on. Pretty good deal for a tranny with 51K at the time. I have since put 35K trouble free miles on it, and going strong. And yes, $1500+ your 700r4 is absolutely ridiculous.
