Question on swapping in a automatic from manual

What kind of automatic should I be looking for and what else is involved? It will be strictly for drag racing.
Thanks,

since it's for a drag car i'll say a 'glide with a brake. you'll need to get rid of the torque arm, i'd back half it and go with ladder bars.

That sounds nice ede, maybe i should "back half it", but not yet. What I'm tring to do is get into bracket racing and want a automatic tranny. I have no experience with trannys, would like to know which automatic will fit and also one that can handle some abuse and torque. I'm not looking for a 3$$$.$$ tranny, just one thats good for what I need.
Also what special tools are needed to rebuild these?

Thanks,
Dave

a lot will depend on your combanation as to the best trans to bracket race with, but again it's hard to beat a glide with a brake. a th350 w/9" tail shaft will fit with a b&m adapter kit pn 30299 for the torque arm. the torque arm limits what trans we can use in the thirdgen f bodys. you cam also use an aftermarket torque arm and relocate the forward attachment point to the floor pan and not the trans.

forgive my ignorance but will the power glide bolt in or will I need an adapter kit for this also?
Powerglides are 3 speed? or 2?

More questions..

I should be able to find one in the junk yard and rebuild it right? On the way home from work I stopped at the book store and saw a book just to the powerglide, and noticed they stopped making them in '73 I think. Is that right?

Thanks for the help!

the glide will bolt up to the engine, i'm sure you'll need to make a cross member and change the drive shaft. also you'll need to do something with the torque arm. a PG is 2 speed, you'd have you choice of 2 1st gear ratios. depending on the weight of you car a PG may not be the best choice, but you never gave the race weight so it's hard to guess. glides work better in light cars than heavy.

I'm confused, looking at your mods list, why would you want something like a PG? How fast is this car?

Assuming you're running 11's or slower, just get a built th700r4 or a th200-4r (use or make a TTA tranny crossmember/TA mount for the latter). They'll both give you an overdrive...

Faster then that... well, a TH350, TH400. The 350 is lighter duty then the 400, but it's lighter and can be built quite durable. The built right 400 would be bullet proof for just about anything sane. Both are 3 speed with no OD.

PG, well, it's a good choice in a very fast, and very light car. I wouldn't consider it unless you're running low 9's and your car is under 3000#...

BTW, if your car is that fast that a PG would be appropriate, then you’re not talking about a rebuilt junkyard tranny, you’re talking all aftermarket parts, starting with an aftermarket case (check out the summit catalog, they’ve got some pics).

From all the great info I get from this site and others I think I'd go with the TH350 or TH400. The PG is also expensive from what i saw.
BUT, in a May '98 High-Tech Performance Mag, this guy Preston Smith was running high 9's with a 700R4 with Art Carr internals. So thats a thought too.
This isn't something I'll be doing now or next month, but is a future mod I need to do and get my plans in order.

92 RSS, I just checked out your web sight and didn’t realize that you were using a Street and Perf. intake. How do you like it? Have you driven the motor with an other intake on it? Does it fit under the hood and with how much clearance?

I was thinking of fabbing up something similar, starting with a edelbrock tunnel ram and leaving off the top entirely (where it looks like they attach the plenum to the upper intake).

I’m debating if I want to go with something like that or a short runner setup like a miniram or similar (actually, I’ve got an LT1 in the garage that will probably loose it’s intake and it will be modified to work with a SBC).

Yeah, I love it especially since nobody I know has one, I don't think anyone on this forum has one either. I ordered this with a spacers which rasied it 2". When I first installed it I used the stock hood and cut a hole out for a scoop which looked cool. Since then I bought the glass hood and had to take out the spacers. That was the only intake I used on this.
There is someone (or more) here that has modified the LT1 intake to fit the L98. Like your thinking about doing.

Oh yeah, with the 2" spacers this thing would pull to 7K. I don't know if the other intakes would allow that.
Needless to say I'm very happy with it and had no problems with it or S&P.
