Crossmembers?

I know I am going to have to get a bracket to relocate the torque arm and am going to have to worry about the DS length but that is not what this thread is about. This is about crossmembers...

Ok I am a little confused with the crossmember needs for swapping. I have done a bunch of searching and it appears that going from 700r4 to th350 that some people are using their stock crossmembers and other are buying one from say spohn. Since there is a split, does the stock crossmember actually work for 700r4 to th350?

It appears from the 700r4-t5 swap tech article and from spohns website that the t5 and the 700r4 use the same crossmember.

In my case I need to go from t5 to th350. So from the above I can deduct the following: 700r4= th350, 700r4= t-5, so t-5= th350 right?

Re: Crossmembers?

i would just forget the guessing game and go with one of these.. kill two birds with one stone.

to me it looks like the th350 mount is a little more forward than stock t-5/700r4.

Re: Crossmembers?

A T5 and a 700R4 might use the same crossmember. The reason I say might is that the dimensions are the same, but the T5 is clocked 17 degrees from straight up and a 700R4 is not. If the T5 mount accounts for this then the crossmembers could be the same, if not then they have the saem dimensions, but use a different crossmember. A TH350 needs a different crossmember because the bellhousing face to centerline of the mount bolt holes is 20.375" on a TH350 and 22.500" on a 700R4/T5.

The T5 is .55" longer than a 700R4 overall. The TH350 overall length is either 27.6875" (6" tailshaft), 30.6875" (9" tailshaft), or 33.8438" (12" tailshaft). If you have a 9" tailshaft you should be able to reuse your stock driveshaft. If you have a 6" tailshaft you will need to have a longer shaft made, and if you have a 12" tailshaft you will need to have the shaft shortened.

The other thing to consider is how are you going to handle the torque arm? The TH350 will not have mounting provisions for it. This is going to add to the cost of the TH350 install. If you're trying to do this on the cheap a 700R4 would be a better choice, because you can use all stock parts to make it work.

Re: Crossmembers?

I know you said you were going for stock. But uness you are stuck on stock and are willing to spend a little more money, go with an aftermarket and an aftermarket torque arm that mounts to the crossmember.

Re: Crossmembers?

Ok thanks guys. I think I am just going to fab my own and worry about it that way...

Found a jegster torque arm kit that I dont remember buying hiding under a pile of old parts. So that should relieve some of the fab work I need to do.

I am going to see what happens with the stock first then work on the fab if it doesnt work...

Can post back afterwards if anyone is interested...
