Can I replace stock lockup converter w/non lockup?

I am thinking about replacing my stock torque converter with a non-lockup 10" Continental converter.

Will I have to replace the chip or will I see a SES light?

Requires a modification to the pump to convert to non lockup. Y not just buy the stall converter you want in a lock-up
from Yank or TCI or Precision (Vigilante).
You would retain the streetability and will
have lower et's and higher MPH with less heat with these new lockup race converters.

If you go this route I'd go real easy on overdrive. It doesn't like the torque multiplication of a non lockup converter.
I'd invest in a good trans cooler too.
Unless you're going to use a hefty gear like 4.10's and go easy on OD, I think all around it's a bad idea. Just my .02 Click the image to open in full size.

If the stall is not to high for the rear end gear ratio it should work out ok in overdrive. Run the biggest trans cooler possible. I have done at least 100 or more (700R4 & 2004R) transmissions with the 10" Continental's over the last several years with only one complaint (he had a 3,200 rpm stall which made overdrive slippery with 3.73's). I keep the stall at 2,400-2,800 rpm max. in most cases. The advantages are about 15-17 lbs. weight loss at the back of the crankshaft (no parts breakage), higher torque multiplication. Disadvantage, loss of about 3/4-1 1/2 mpg on the freeway. Never had a problem with heat (when using non-lockup TC's) running an external cooler.

The used trans and converter in question was actually built by you. I have a 16,000 GVW B&M supercooler for the trans.

BTW, 1/2mile per a gallon decrease? I'm not worried about gas mileage in this thing.... Click the image to open in full size.
