It seems that it would be just as good or better to go with a Strange rear end, rather than the Ford 9 inch. It would be less headaches, as far as welding and fitment issues. I don't see the point in going to the ford 9 inch swap.

I was looking at the Strange 12 bolt from Summit....this one, with a posi unit and 3.73 gears http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STR-PRG230/ and I don't know why this one is 300 bucks more http://www.summitracing.com/parts/STR-PRG210/ I like the Strange because it's the best price, for a strong rear end.....The Mosers don't include the gears or anything, and they are 1800 bucks.
The 210 version costs more because it comes with an Eaton a posi in it. The 230 version has a spool.
What kind of headaches and welding/fitment are you talking about. If you're trying to adapt a junkyard diff then there will be a lot of fabrication work. If you're buying an aftermarket, direct bolt in, diff for a third gen such as a 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60, there should be no welding/fitment issues.
When you custom order a complete, ready to bolt in diff, you can get it with or without brakes. Open carrier, spool or posi of your choice. Any gear ratio you want. Any axle size you want.
Mixing and matching will always change the final price.

Is the Ford 9 inch the best/strongest rear upgrade? It's supposed to be very hard to break, from what I hear. Should I get the 31 spline option, aluminum carrier option and the aluminum pinion support? I'll be pushing over 500 hp on my 383 setup.
I've seen a 9" fail and almost broke a factory casting center myself last year. 12 bolts and Dana 60's can also fail.
31 spline is more than enough for your power level but it doesn't take much to upgrade to 33 spline. The advantage of the 9" is the availability of aftermarket parts. An aluminum center section and pinion support really brings the weight down. I changed my ratio recently and it was just about a one handed operation to put the center section in. You can put any gear ratio on the same carrier so you can put 2.50 gears on it if you highway cruise all the time or put 7.00 gears on for short track dirt racing without having to buy a new carrier (posi).
At the 500 HP level a 12 bolt is more than strong enough, and lighter than the other choices. The 12 bolt is good to 600 or 700 HP and has several upgrades to make it stronger.
