We have a 91 camaro rs with a 406 small block which is pushing near 500 hp. The 350 transmission that is in it is weak. I believe its a 70s model. Any way I want to know what would be the best transmission for it? It will be an automatic.

since you already have the th350 in it...id just rebuild it with upgraded parts so it can ahndle the hp. Unless your lookin for an overdrive unit...then id personally go with the 200r4

To clear things up, TH350's are good trans's for racing, unless you want OD. You can build them to handle 1000 + HP if need be. Also, their relatively cheap to have a GOOD mechanic go through and do whats necessary to make them racing transmissions....
Contact Jake......hes down in TX...
Here's a link to my thread that's exactly like yours...
The transmission guy here in town said the transmission is a piece of crap Because of the age. Also it couldnt handle the power. He believes the transmisson came from a 70s model camaro. I would love to just rebuild it and make it good for some where around 700 hp.
O and thanks for the link and the help. The local shop said I should go with a turbo 400. I believe thats pretty much what Jake was talking about. Again thanks.

Yep, do make sure though, if you want a racing trans, its highly unlikely that a local trans shop will do everything.
I just got my trans back from my guy, hes machined for new bearings, extra clutchs etc etc. Its much more then just replacing parts and calling it good.
Its a completely different trans then where it started. My guy was a little cheaper then Jake, but Jake is the guy who sent me to him lol.
You should be able to get a TH350 to handle that no prob. A TH400 is heavy and really overkill imho for what you're running.

just replace the clutches, seals and definitly the drum with a HD 36 element sprag and your will be fine. I have a th350 with all ATI RMVB, overhaul kit and ATI Drum and 36 element sprag in my near 600 hp motor. works great.

i've used a th350 behind my supercharged chevelle now for approx. 9 years. It makes approx. 530hp. I have stock clutches-stock everything-except for a B&M shift kit stage 2, and a bolt in center support. The support takes care of the weakness of the case lugs wearing down and popping the support snapring. Yes a better third gear drum would be nice with an upgraded sprag, but just leave the dampener spring in second gear so the sprag doesn't hit so damn hard and it's a mute point. I'll try and include a pic of the support you should use. for this power level a th350 stock can even hang as long as you have a proper build and shift kit
Thanks to all of you for the info. Im now leaning towards keeping the 350 and just putting some a$$ into it. Its not really for racing. Its a weekend car that sometimes has to show a punstang what its made of lol. Im keeping my options open and dont plan to do this for atleast a month. Again thanks
