Has anyone ever used or at least seen this tool in person? The price sounds really low if it's actually a decent tool.. Found it on Randys Ring + Pinion, here's the link.. not much info or even a pic.. http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...px?ProdID=4653 I've never had need to buy one before since ever diff I've ever rebuilt has been while working at a dealership so I simply used the shop tools, sadly I'm working at a very large privetly owned shop at the moment where nobody has one and everyone typically goes by the "that feels about right" method, which I will admit I've done several times, but only on my own stuff and never had a problem. I tend to take a lot of pride in my work and prefer to do things right the first time, especially at the insane labor rate we charge. I know that this customer will be paying well over 2,500 for a simple rear diff rebuild and a little brake work so I want it to be right. Sorry for the long winded post.. anyway, any input? I just need something not too expensive that can accurately read inch lbs, dial or beam style doesnt matter.. anyone???

I don't use a pinion depth tool. I think they are a waste of time and money. The contact pattern is the only thing that really matters. Set the gears by the contact pattern and it will be better than using the tool. I've used these tools a few times and I always had to go back and make adjustments because the tools are just not accurate. Learn to read the contact pattern and you will be much better off.
