Ok i have a 89 iroc i just bought and i dont know what the **** to do, its a 700R4 and the fluid is burnt, im gonna change it (not flush just drop the pan) and put a new filter in sometime soon, pretty much whenever my dad feels like it cause he wont let me do it myself sense iv never done it befor -_-.....

The problem is that when its cold i cant shift into over drive and most importantly reverse!!! seriously i have to everse into anywhere i go and i cannot parralel park cause i wont be able to get out! iv only hade the car for about over a month, the only problems while driving were that once when it should have shifted it just did nothing, didnt even try to catch, i shifted to drive over drive nutral and back and it did nothing so i had to pull into a street park for like 5 second then it was fine, then another time (these occurences were like a week or 2 apart) it slipped pretty bad. but other than that (besides no overdrive and reverse when cold obviously) not a problem its been fine, and its been VERY cold recently, so that could be why those 2 occurences happened because those were RIGHT after i started driving and was shifting into second gear.

Now from what iv looked up the overdrive is just because of the cold, but i can find NOTHING NADA ZIP ZILCH on the lack of reverse when cold! i can when hot, but not cold! its like i have the oppisite problem of most people! everywhere iv looked has somehow mentioned a tv cable so i wanna check that but...... i have no clue what that is, how to check it, and how to fix it if it is messed up.... so ANY HELP WOULD BE SO APPRECIATED!

Does it work in 1,2 and D when this happens? Did you check the fluid level?

To me sounds like its gone and looking at a rebuild.

i hate to have to tell you this but your trans took a s***. Burnt fluid can mean a couple things, too much heat, or internal damage . and the only way to fix is to have it rebuilt or buy a new trans. from the soud of it the overdrive band is gone If you change the fluid and filter the problem will most likely get worse a good thing to check is if your torque converter is locking up. if it isnt this could cause overheating

Ya 1,2 and D work fine. It only acts weird when im shifting into 2nd, and I don't think its the over drive because after I'm warmed up it runs fine, like I could floor it from a dead stop to 80 10 times in a row and it wouldn't slip at all, its only when its cold, I really want to check the tv cable and adjust it but I don't know what that is or how to do it, I can't find anywhere that someones had the same problem as me, like the fluids been burnt sense I bought the car and nothings gotten worse, just those 2 occurences and that's when its really cold out, it did it again today and its in the teens here and it was right after I started the car.

Burnt fluid means that something inside the tranny has gotten VERY hot and that is never a good thing. also the fluid viscosity is going to be different because it has been "stressed" and the viscosity has changed but personally i would drive it till it dies the have it rebuilt or buy a new trans i would not change the fluid either maybe add some if its low but thats it
