if this is in the wrong thread please move it. thank you

Re: how to remove engine while keeping tranny in place?

get under the car, remove the inspection cover, and there are 3 bolts holding the converter to the flexplate, remove them, then everything else you ahve ot unbolt and remove the engine. then unbolt the flex plate from the engine outside the car.

Its probably easier to pull the engine and trans as a unit, just saying...

well the plate can stay with the engine as far as i care, the 3.4 im getting comes with a tranny so ill just pop the tranny and bellhouseing off of it then drop the engine in.

When I replaced my 2.8 all we did was pull the cover off the bottom of the tranny, unbolted the flex plate from the converter, and unbolted the tranny from the motor, and pulled it out.

Re: how to remove engine while keeping tranny in place?

The pain in the neck part is trying to get the motor mounts lined up along with the dowel pins on the block. You have to move the engine forward to get it off of the dowel pins but you cant because the motor mounts limit front to rear movement. keeping the trans supported is a pain and you basically need a crowbar to get the engine back in.

Remove engine and trans together, much simpler. Jack the rear of the car up really high for a better remove/install angle. Goodluck!

i did the same thing on a 357 swap and when it came to putting it back in with the tranny in it took 3times as long as to line it up in the engine bay was a pain. Up to you what you do as its your car but my vote is pullit all as it makes working on it 10 times easier.

Re: how to remove engine while keeping tranny in place?

I built a bar that bolts in place into the front sub frame. The front of the transmission pan would set on it when the engine was pulled. It only dropped down maybe at most 1/4 inch which made putting the engine back in really easy, basically fell into place. Another way, just put a jack that doesn't leak down under the transmission and pull the engine. As for the flex plate, just unbolt it from the converter as the others have said. Slide back the converter and pull the engine.

Replace nothing but a 350. Your car will be a power house even with a stock 350 out of a 87-99 truck.

Re: how to remove engine while keeping tranny in place?

when removing the engine in my 86 IROC, i too wanted to remove just the engine BUT you cant get at the bell housing bolts so i did this;first i lifted the drive train up enough to remove the bracket to mount thru bolts, then i removed the mount brackets from the engine, then i let it down till the oil pan was just touching the frame now you can just push it over and there is clearance to get the bolts out.i did the three on one side pushed it over and got the other three

Re: how to remove engine while keeping tranny in place?

Thats one way to do it thats for sure but you didnt need to do that as you could have reached them with a open ended wrench but a socket is so much nicer to use. Hows the swap going for you??

Cool man let us know how it goes. I hope to be droping in my motor one of these weeks as last night it snowed 8 inches here so it will be a little longer than I thought
