axle question/ whats broken
first i have to admit that the axel is a part of my car that I've never had to mess with and thus my knowledge on the subject is limited
my car is a 1987 z28 model, factory five speed with a 3.23 gear set
cover plate on the axle says limited slip. from what I've been told and from what i understand its a "posi" axle. (that seems to be the word everyone likes to throw around)
my problem is that all of the sudden my passenger side tire is consistently the only one breaking loose, making traction even more hard to find
so what is it exactly that wares out and what needs to be done/ replaced to fix it?

Re: axle question/ whats broken
If I replace the posi unit, would it be worth going to the eaton offered on jegs or just replace it with another auborn. And what seals or bearings would need to be replaced as well?

Eaton posi does seem to be a popular swap among
thirgenners here, but i don't know much about them.
I have a torsen waiting to go into mine to replace a
gov-lock that works like it is supposed to,but i don't
trust-especially don't care for the spider gear mesh on
the gov-lock...Carrier bearings can be difficult to
remove undamaged from the old carrier,so will likely
need new ones even if the old ones are still in good
shape-make sure to get timken or other high quality
brand.Could change the axle seals if wear or damage
evident, but i have never had any trouble with those.

are there any tools or techniques that are required?
im not expecting this to be an easy un bolt, bolt in swap

Re: axle question/ whats broken
The easiest do-it-yourself fix still requires checking backlash before and after. Also need to keep the carrier shims in order, and even so, probably still need a good shim assortment. Your gears may also be worn, and this might be a good chance to upgrade. Got drums or discs? Want to keep the 3.23:1, or try something else? You may have some good options, depending on your answers.
