Transmission RIP

So here's my story. I have an 86 Z28 305TPI with automatic, had it for a couple months so far and I've noticed the tranny slipping every now and then. It drove great besides that for the amount of time I've been driving it. Until today.
I was at a buddy's house and I started her up and took down the road, and it slipped and it wouldn't make it past 2000 rpm without slipping. I rolled up to another friend of mine's house to park and check it out. Tranny fluid was dryyy. So we got a few qrts of fluid and some stop slip fluid, and poured it in, checking the levels and all that. Then we had to get it back to my house, so I drove it back and I'm certain my transmission is gone. Overdrive slips up pretty much totally, tried manually shifting it and drive worked but rpms would hang in the mid range. Couldn't make it past 30mph. She was limping hard home and it was rather sad. Made it back and and there's a puddle of yellow-green fluid under the front end.
So now that I know it's screwed, I'm without a car and can't do much to have it fixed. What do you say I do from here?

Yellow green is coolant. I would fix the coolant problem while it is sitting there waiting for a new tranny.

Re: Transmission RIP

Just what I was thinking. Yellow/green is coolant. The tranny fliud is supposed to be red.

Re: Transmission RIP

Yes, I know there's a difference. I went and took a look under the hood and found a disconnected hose without a clamp that I suppose all the coolant came from. All of my other radiator hoses were connected. It's kind of confusing because apparently the 3 major hoses are already connected and my radiator is full and clean. I believe it's an aftermarket radiator also. The loose hose goes back and connected to a metal hose that runs into the firewall. I'm not too sure where it comes from or where it goes but it reached directly to the radiator but I don't think that's where it goes. I'm lost at the moment but do you guys think this is linked to my transmission slipping, and perhaps burning trans fluid? Plus I have some burnt oil in the engine, so I know it will need an oil change too. What's the connection? I'm baffled so far.

Re: Transmission RIP

The coolant line going into the firewall is for the heater core. Actually, there should be two lines going into the firewall, one is a supply for the heater core and the other is the return. As far as the connection goes with the trans, I'm not to sure. the only connection the trans has with the cooling system is two steel lines running from the trans to the radiator, to cool the trans fluid. If it's an after market radiator, maybe it doesn't have provisions for the trans coolant lines and they were bypassed and your fluid could be getting too hot and burning up? Or the planetary assembly could have just simply cracked in half. I had that happen on a 700 i had once. I was driving on the expressway and all of a sudden the car would barely accelerate. My planetary assembly just cracked. I had the whole trans rebuilt.

Re: Transmission RIP

AMSCOVA,
Dude... feeling your pain! Had the same thing happen to me... I have been rebuilding a 1986 Z-28 with T-Tops... Went out for a week end afternoon drive and it started slipping. I started rebuilding the car at about 150,000 miles and it has about 2-3,000 on since that time. Changed the filter and fluid and I think that killed it. Its going on blocks tomorrow for a tranny yank and rebuild. Looking for some lessons learned from others that can provide some up grades to the tranny while I re-build. Interior has been completely redone with kick'en stereo. Rebuilt the rear end up to the tranny and will rebulid the front end while the tranny is out. Its a 305 and the motor runs tight and does not burn oil (with my luck when the tranny's back in it, it will!).
Would like to know if I should put a performance kit in the tranny and should I upgrade the torque converter? I plan on keeping the motor just the way it is but if it goes i will go with a LS-350. Any ideas?

Re: Transmission RIP

Update: Apparently the loose hose doesn't go to anything and the car works without it. I guess it went to the AC but it was bypassed and the previous owner left it in the car. So I'm not worried about that. Also, I lifted the car and looked under the trans pan and nothing seemed to be out of order. So it's an internal problem. Probably something to do with the upper gears.
So, I need to think of the best, least expensive solution. Anybody have any advice? I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this predicament. What's cheaper to do? Get a rebuild kit, bring it to get it rebuilt? Or find another 700r4 and swap it? What's a reasonable price for each of these routes?
