How tough can a 700r4 be built

So i was just wondering what the actual potential of a 700r4 is. Ive heard they cant be built tough enough to handle more than like 400hp at best. I hope thats not right. Any one know??

Sure, but no one will tell you for how long.
Because third gear is the weak link and HP & TQ will eventually kill it.

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

I've gone thru 2 700s, 1 was a basic perf rebuild, and 2nd was a full stage 2 with all the goodies, neither lasted behind a 383 stroker, have switched to a T56

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

I would spend whatever i had to if i knew it would handle like 500hp. The reason why im askin is cuz im learning that tranny is comp controlled so i cant take off a lot of what i wanted to(emission, smog, all that stuff) without disabiling the tranny and its functions.
I wanted to be able pop the hood and just see an old school v-8 with headers and a fat carb. With an msd ignition being the most complicated thing in there. I guess the 770r4 wont like that.

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

The 700-R4 isn't computer-controlled, except for the torque converter clutch.

Not sure about any 770-R4 though; never heard of that one. But I'm just a n00b and still learning, so maybe that kind is different?

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

No computer controls on a 700r4, only controls torque converter lockup.
You can get an aftermarket kit to control torque converter lockup with out the computer if you go that route.
Talk to Dana at Probuilt automatics, he is very knowledgeable about building performance 700r4's.

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

I have helped hundreds of people over the years supplying them with the right parts for their 700R4's and 4L60E's. A few went into the nines, more in the tens, and many more in the elevens and twelves in the quarter mile, and getting many hundreds of passes without problems. They can be built very successfully when using the right parts, keeping the shifts smooth at part throttle, matching shift firmness to torque input on the 1-2 WOT shift, torque converter diameter and stall, how you drive and what the vehicle is intended for.

if you want a "old school" car .then go buy one.too many people ask this BS question ."how much equipment can I rip off my car?? I only want to see engine and a big ol carb"
and the 700 is not comp controlled.i really hate to see an otherwise nice 3rd gen "school boyed" to death.might I suggest a nice Hyundai??

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

The 770 was a typo. meant 700r4.
Right on thats good news. It would be cool to have the power and still retain overdrive. Really just want to be able to simplify things under the hood after i put in a 350 or 383
I test drove an 86 a few years ago that didnt look like much on the outside but when i popped the hood i was really impressed. Clean, well dressed 350 with headers and hardly nothin as far as emissions and stuff. Just all the good stuff.
The old man has a 72 2wd c10 with a stroker, it runs really good. Wouldnt mind that motor in my camaro

Re: How tough can a 700r4 be built

WOW thats a hell of a link. Thanks vetteoz. I could read up for days.

I put my plow truck in the shop this morning for some vital attention. Those guys build diesel trannys for leadfoot guys with 1000hp.
Good to know theres a way to do it.
